Remote learning laptops for Philly youth!

Tax deductible
Project YES YouthBuild in Philadelphia, PA seeks to help young adults earn their GED’s and so much more. Each student is dually enrolled in a hands-on construction curriculum preparing them for a career in construction. Additionally, the students are all AmeriCorps members. They’ve helped feed communities, provided clothes and school supplies to young children, and rebuilt housing for community members in need. Furthermore, each student is guided through job skills training, including resume building, mock interviews, and identifying skills and interest. There are so many more aspects to our program, but these are just a few key elements.

When school is in regular session, we have a computer lab with desktop computers that the students can take turns using. For many of our students, school is their only safe, permanent place. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve had to switch to virtual learning with virtually no resources. Our funds are allocated and limited. We never intended for our students to have to complete classwork at home that wouldn’t require more than a paper and pencil, because for many of our students, those are the only learning related resources they may have.

We’ve partnered with Team Children  to help put the proper technology into each student’s hands to learn from home. Each day, older and slower computers are discarded because they are not equipped with all of the latest technological advances. Team Children’s mission is to re-purpose them to ensure that every child has access to a computer in the comfort and safety of their home, every school has adequate computers in classrooms, and no social service organization is without the technological tools to accomplish their goals. A refurbished laptop is approximately $100, and Team Children can provide us with 25 laptops. One generous donor has already supplied us with four laptops, making our new goal to fund 21 laptops!

Statistics from the Pew Research Center may help to paint the unfortunately grim reality of many of our students: “Even with more jobs and lower unemployment, the poverty rate stood at nearly 26 percent, and Philadelphia retained its title as the poorest of America’s 10 most populous cities. Nearly half of the city’s 400,000 poor residents were living in deep poverty. For one adult with two children, that meant an income of less than $10,000, which is 50 percent of the federal poverty threshold.” 1

For many of our students, they’ll be the first just to graduate high school or attain their GED. Our students have big plans. And we mean BIG. They want to become entrepreneurs, hairdressers, barbers, welders, contractors, they want to own construction companies, they want to be nurses, firefighters, EMT’s - the list goes on. These students want to get their lives on track and do what generations before them weren’t able to. They don't want a hand out, they want a hand up. They want adults who believe in them, empower them, and give them the resources for success.

All of our staff and students would be so grateful to receive a donation in any amount to help us reach our goal.
