Support Diversity in Canadian Veterinary Medicine

Dear supporters,
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves. Our names are
Kayla, Keisha and Melanie; We are currently student veterinarians at the Ontario Veterinary College. The lack of diversity within Canadian professional programs, in particular veterinary medicine, has inspired us to help break down barriers and improve diversity within the profession. Statistics from the American Veterinary Medical Association highlights this underrepresentation, with only 2% of the veterinary profession being occupied by Black individuals at any given time. Although no Canadian bodies collect racialized data on veterinary professionals, as of 2016 Black Ontarians make up 16.5% of Province, while Black identifying students account for less than 1% of the student veterinarians enrolled at the Ontario Veterinary College.
Through these unprecedented times we as fellow Black students, are inspired to make a change in our profession. As a result, we are currently working together to create the Canadian VIBE (Veterinary Professionals Instilling Black Excellence) Network. Having a network of Black veterinary professionals throughout Canada will provide an invaluable opportunity for current students, future students, veterinary technicians and veterinarians to connect. Our vision is to create a safe space for Black veterinary professionals and to promote diversity in the veterinary field via mentorship, connections between members, and most importantly, inspiration and guidance to young Black students interested in the profession.
We are in the early stages of launching the Canadian VIBE Network and would love for you to be a part of this exciting journey. We are seeking sponsorship to aid in the launch of our platform. Your donations will help the Canadian VIBE Network achieve its goals by providing:
• Scholarships to Black identifying students entering the veterinary profession
• Establishing an online directory of Black veterinary professionals in Canada
• Community outreach programs tailored to engage and support Black and marginalized students interested in the veterinary profession
• Live-streamed webinars and events for professional development
• Establishing a community space that is safe for open discussion amongst Black veterinary professionals
