Cancer patient lost everything in a fire

Donation protected

My friend Albert Bradford was renting a room in a house that was destroyed by fire at 4am on Oct 1, 2020.

His last paid for (by the Red Cross gift card) night is Oct 7th. He needs money to pay for the hotel until the Veteran’s homelessness hotel voucher kicks in.  He was told that would take 3-4 weeks. That voucher will then pick up the hotel costs while he waits the 3-4 months for the special Veteran’s section 8 voucher for vets who are homeless (he has already applied for those). He had a minimum wage job for 3.5 years but was laid off when the pandemic started and that business has closed. Currently his only income is unemployment compensation.

Besides assistance paying for the hotel he needs money to buy clothes and other basics, and when he finally has a more permanent place to stay, for used furniture, bedding, etc. Today his elderly car was towed to a shop. It has a blown motor and that needs replaced so that he has transportation (there isn’t much public transportation in this area).

Trying to save his cat, Prince, his hair was singed and he was burned on the back of his neck by the heat (burns are first and second degree about the size of my hand).  When the fire broke through the wall he had to leave his cat to get out himself. He kept calling it his cat from outside (left his door in his room to the outside open for it). He is incredibly traumatized that he couldn't save his cat and heard it screaming until it was overcome by smoke inhalation (we hope that happened first anyway) and then was burned to death. Later I dug around with a shovel and couldn’t find Prince’s body anywhere in his incinerated room.

The loss of his cat is devastating to him – his cat also functioned as an emotional support cat though his recent stage 2 stomach cancer treatment (all of this has been during the pandemic which delayed some treatment and surgery). It may have recurred already. Post treatment (chemo, surgery to remove ½ of his stomach, then more chemo) the CT scan was clear. The one he just had shows a spot on his liver. A needle biopsy done the week before last didn’t give a definitive answer (it was very small) so he has another CT scan scheduled for the end of October.

Anything will help. If you want to pay the hotel directly message me and I will give you that information.
