Since 1989, The Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) has served the New York Tri-state area with services for immigrant Korean/Asian American survivors of  domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. KAFSC provides comprehensive, wrap-around services based on the individual needs of our survivors and their families, all in a culturally and linguistically appropriate setting. KAFSC has one grounding mission: to create a violence free society and to give everyone the opportunity to live a safe and healthy life based on dignity and mutual respect.




Throughout the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, reports of violent incidents at home increased dramatically both globally and domestically. The enforcement of social distancing and safety measures such as shutting down schools and businesses meant that immigrant survivors and their children are trapped at home and face additional violence and challenges. Financial difficulties compounded with social isolation exacerbates existing abusive relationships. Throughout the pandemic, KAFSC never closed its doors to the public and its frontline workers stepped up to provide critical support to the Korean American community at a crucial time when culturally and linguistically appropriate services were needed more than ever. In fact, between February and July, KAFSC’s 24 hour bilingual hotline saw a 300% increase in call volume of which 88% were related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. 






Handsome Rice is a Korean restaurant founded by Chef Hansong Kim. He opened Handsome Rice to provide healthy and tasty Korean dishes for the neighborhood.


In May, at the height of the pandemic and economic shutdown, Handsome Rice and Chef Hansong Kim partnered with KAFSC as one of seven partner restaurants in KAFSC’s first ever Food Giving Initiative which provided 5,700 ethnically familiar meals to immigrant survivors and their children.  For 15 weeks, these meals provided not only sustenance and nutrition but also a measure of comfort and consistency at a time when many faced loss of livelihood and uncertainty about the future.






The Food Giving Initiative introduced Hansong to the overwhelming need and challenges faced by immigrant survivors and their children and he felt compelled to find additional ways to support KAFSC, the survivors, and add his voice to “Break the Silence, End the Violence.”







In honor of October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, all of the proceeds of 'HANDSOME RICE Tote Bag Sale' will go to KAFSC so that they can continue to fill the gap for critical culturally and linguistically accessible support for immigrant survivors and their children.
