Help Walter Rubin Walk Again

WalterRubin has been a beloved member of our for over 9 years. On June 5th of this year, Walter started limping and panting in the middle of the night. By the next day, he was unable to walk. We brought him to Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Brewster NY where he had an emergency MRI followed by surgery for ruptured discs on T11/12.
The neurosurgeon gave us a prognosis of 75% that Walter would walk again. He didn't improve all that much so we started rehab at the Somers Animal Hospital in July. Dr. Walker gave us a 50/50 shot at recovery and we brought Wally up to rehab 3-4 times a week all through the summer. Improvement was painfully slow. We invested in a doggie wheelchair from WalkinPets to help him get around while we continued working on helping him to regain function in his back legs.
In October, Walter came down with a UTI/ fever of unknown origin that lasted 8 days. After numerous IV fluids, antibiotics and diagnostic tests (ultrasounds, x rays) Walter was put on Prednisone to reduce the fever. The steroid worked and we are still tapering him off of the drug. Side effects from the drug and the UTI caused Walter's back legs to atrophy. So now we are back at square one with rehab sessions to build back some strength.
Walter needs to continue rehab sessions, at least twice a week, to ensure that he builds back strength and balance in his legs. With each passing month, the possibility of Walter walking again becomes less and less. We are not giving up on our beloved four legged family member. But money is getting to become a challenge. Walter's mom, Susan, has been out of work since March due to Covid19. She's exhausted all of her savings on Walter's recovery and her unemployment benefits end on December 26.
