What is the #FreeThemAllVA fund?

Detention is inhumane. Detention during a pandemic is especially cruel. In late March, the people detained at ICA-Farmville went on hunger strike in response to growing concerns of a COVID outbreak. They were met with retaliation, including being placed in solitary confinement. By mid July, 90% of the people detained at ICA-Farmville had tested positive for COVID-19. People detained at Farmville and Caroline detention center have continued to protest the inhumane conditions in the facilities and have been met with escalating levels of brutality. We must #FreeThemAll.

Now more than ever it is vital to support the hundreds of people still detained in Virginia, still exposed to a pandemic in a place where they cannot quarantine, and still facing retaliation for insisting on access to basic medical care.

This fund will cover

- Immediate food and medical care upon release, as well as other immediate needs such as phone bills and transportation

- Partial bond fees

- Accommodations to be able to quarantine for two weeks after release

- Commissary contributions

How did it start?

On April 27, we hosted a car caravan in Fairfax to call attention to the inhumanity of detention and incarceration at all times, and especially during a global pandemic. During the caravan, a few select comrades were targeted and harassed by Fairfax county police. The police that responded were disorganized, mask-less, angry, and blatantly discriminatory — after stopping several of our marshals they let a white man off with a warning but issued three citations, including a misdemeanor charge to a Black comrade. This fundraiser started out focused on legal representation for our comrades facing police retaliation from the caravan, but has now expanded to help support bond fees for eligible folks detained in Virginia detention centers, and immediate support upon their release.
