The CALMA Community Fund

In April, we started our first round of fundraising for the CALMA Community Fund, and thanks to our committed and beloved community, we were able to raise $19,180 between multiple platforms. This money went directly to local immigrant families’ rents and provided 276 bags of essential supplies for Day Laborers.

We are excited to announce our second round of fundraising!

With shelter-in-place practices still in effect and the local economy still in a downturn, our undocumented community continues to struggle to find safe work, and with government providing very little to no assistance, it is very difficult for them to make ends meet.

THE IMMEDIATE : In a continued response to COVID-19, we have grown over the past three months to support ten local Bay Area families with financial assistance and connections to resources. We want to raise another $20,000, and need your help!

These families were already in vulnerable situations that were recently made worse by the COVID shelter in place orders as they are unable to work or access federal aid. Our aim through this direct response is to ensure that they are able to pay rent and keep a roof over their heads and food in their homes as they weather this unprecedented global crisis.

ONGOING : Beyond direct aid for our families, the CALMA Community Fund supports our community outreach and education programs:

Community Engagement  : Our main goal is to provide support in navigating the complex institutional barriers to fundamental needs such as housing and food security, employment, education, mental and physical health. Our program incorporates long-term, comprehensive and holistic follow up to support breaking cycles of poverty.

Day Laborer Outreach  : CALMA’s team of dedicated volunteers travel around the Bay Area and provide educational materials and resources directly to day laborers in our communities. These materials include legal resources, housing and food support, funding, and counseling opportunities for individuals and their families. Recently, our team has distributed masks and hand sanitizer during these meetings to ensure their safety while seeking work.

Know Your Rights Education  : These trainings are taught by volunteers in partnership with legal resources, who are well versed in the legal rights of undocumented or otherwise targeted individuals. The goal is to ensure that community members are well versed in their legal rights, are able to advocate for themselves when needed, and know who to reach out to for additional support if approached by police or ICE officials.

The Bay Area has a unique community and unrivaled history of activism. We are so honored to be able to stand beside you in offering support to those in need and strengthen our community in the process.
