I'm shaving my head for Cancer Research

Cancer REALLY Sucks!

I have a beef with cancer! Who wouldn't, 1 in 2 of us will have some form of cancer during our life,  but my cancer hating journey began 9 years ago when my Nan died of Pancreatic Cancer. At first she was thought to have a bad virus, but after staying with us we realised she was in so much pain and there was something bigger going on. Once in hospital she was diagnosed and sadly left us 6 weeks later in a hospital bed.

Over the last 8 years working as a lecturer at New College in Swindon, I have seen each year, lots of my students and colleagues effected by the plight of cancer. They or their family members are diagnosed and if they survive or not, their lives are changed forever.

Then in 2017, my best friend from university told me she had stage 2 Non Hodgkin Lymphoma, aged 30. This was hard to take in, but she is a strong young woman and embodies the beloved British phrase 'Keep Calm and Carry On!'  However at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, she was told her cancer had progressed and during the lockdown needed to start Chemo. My anger grew at cancer and I was upset, as I could not do anything to help her since she lives in Manchester and I now live in Swindon. Even now after breaking the first peak, I can't risk visiting her because her immune system is low so is shielding, but what can I do?

I can't really do bake sales because of Covid-19, but I decided I could shave my head! Inspired by an ex student of mine, (shout out to Georgia Munt) I plan on shaving my head on the 1st October 2020 at 10am at New College, where I work (hopefully.) I have long hair, so I am also going to donate my hair to The Little Princess Trust to make wigs for young people who also have cancer, because lets face it, cancer does not discriminate!

I originally wanted to raise at least £1000, which is a tough target during these challenging times.  But since looking for sponsors I discovered my other friend from uni days discovered she had breast cancer in February 2020, so I’m doubled the amount I wantEd to raise. Then I found out 4 days after fundraising a dear gentleman I have known for 6 years and worked for, has died from cancer at 72. Cancer is causing too much pain, so what the hell, I’ve increased my goal again by another £1000. What ever you can spare, be it a small or large donation would be greatly appreciated. All money goes directly to life prolonging and life changing cancer research which is fantastic, but I'm doing this to show support for my mates Jo & Renee x
