Support Community in Crisis to Build Opportunities

Donation protected
SolKomYo, a community-based organizaton in the northeast of Haiti, is an amazing team of Haitians who are now struggling to make ends meet. They have demonstrated time and time again that they can do amazing work and support their fellow community members. Now they need your support to pass this crisis and get back to their regular jobs of community empowerment and change. Support the local team and their families with small donations, so that they continue to do the impactful work they are committed to.

The current pandemic affected even stronger those most vulnerable among ourselves, especially those in the developing world who are left in the face of this disaster without basic needs and means to provide.

This is the case in Haiti, where the current crisis closed the border with the Dominican Republic, the main provider of food in the area. As a result, food prices surged and locals are striving to reorient themselves towards growing their own food. Beyond providing sustenance for their families, smallholder farming with decentralized, circular food systems that support smallholder farmers is essential for future global food security, indicated in the UN report  shared in May 2020.

SolKomYo, a local Haitian organization, is ready to lead this initiative. They work with cooperatives, local community leaders, farmer cooperatives, women cooperatives, and youth to advance community development and create means for community empowerment.

This current crisis affected the SolKomYo team who suspended their activities and volunteered their time to conduct community-based awareness campaigns regarding COVID 19 and how the community members can protect themselves. They would like to go back into their regular work and support local families and cooperatives to provide technical support so that this interest in small scale farming can be transformed into an opportunity to secure Haitian food locally and reduce its dependency in the DR, following their motto, “Turning Obstacles into Opportunities”.

Antonio, the leader of the organization, stressed that the time is now to support local communities. Not only are vulnerabilities exacerbated due to COVID-19, but these practices will serve Haitian lives and livelihoods for the long-term. They would need 10,000$ to support their community initiatives, conduct training, provide seeds and technical advisory to local farmers prior, during and post-harvest.

Solkomyo team needs your support to transform this challenge into an opportunity. They have the team, experience and community relationships to make this happen.
