Solidarity with S & T

Donation protected
Solidarity funds for a family violently and illegally evicted during a global pandemic.

S is a survivor of domestic violence who escaped to LA with her two children and almost no resources. Though she has consistently struggled with housing precarity, she and her partner T have built a life and a family together in LA, doing everything in their power to fight for a safe home for their kids. But like so many Black and Brown tenants across South Central, their landlord gave S & T an illegal eviction notice, despite the statewide “eviction moratorium” intended to protect renters unable to pay rent due to covid-19.

S,T, and their neighbors made it clear to their landlord that they knew their rights and had no intention of leaving their home. In response, their landlord, a notorious slumlord and PATH voucher beneficiary who preys on the recently unhoused, personally demolished their kitchen with a sledgehammer -- a kitchen shared by multiple families with small children. But with nowhere to go, S&T were still willing to fight. They joined together with their neighbors to form a tenants association, and worked with the LA Tenants Union to organize rapid response actions to face off against the landlord, sheriffs, and workers called to change their locks in the middle of the night.

They have stood their ground with community against constant threats of violence. But when the landlord called child protective services (on the unsafe conditions she created!) S & T were finally forced to find another place to shelter. Though they never legally ceded the apartment and are still working with solidarity lawyers to sue their ruthless landlord, they need emergency funds immediately to find safe and secure housing for themselves and their kids, and to cover legal fees.

Our movement for tenant power needs leaders like S & T, who know what it means to struggle for our human right to housing. Who can see clearly that the violence committed by one “mom & pop” landlord is enabled by the structural, racial violence of our for-profit housing system. The police, city, and county have failed to secure them safe, dignified housing. Help them stay in the fight.

Thank you for your solidarity. Join the Los Angeles Tenants Union and help us fight to abolish landlords.
