Home Therapy Equipment #SaveSamStrider

Donation protected
The basics: Sam Halbert was stung by a bee on July 30, 2019. He went into anaphylactic shock, during which his blood pressure dropped and caused an anoxic brain injury. While at our local hospital, Mission, Sam went into a coma. The neurologists told us that it was unlikely that he would emerge from the coma and, if he did, the best we could hope for was minimally conscious and/or severely disabled. This GoFundMe campaign is for the larger and/or more expensive home therapy equipment. Currently, we are raising money for the Shed Light Laser so we can continue laser therapy at home. (more detailed info about the laser at the end)

Long story short(ish): As the below video shows, Sam came out of the coma in a spectacular fashion! Laughing and using our phrase, 'forever and always,' I knew Sam was present and set about working on his recovery. It's been a crazy ride! We were discharged from Mission to a skilled nursing facility, Carolina Pines. Our goal was to level Sam up enough in his therapy so he would be accepted into the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. Shepherd Center is a rehab hospital that specializes in brain and spinal injuries. After 5 weeks and an epic insurance battle, our goal was accomplished and off we went to Atlanta.

Sam stayed as an inpatient at the Shepherd Center from 8/24/19 to 1/4/20. While there, he made tremendous gains! There were also struggles but, with the guidance and experience of his team of doctors and therapists, we overcame them. From the inpatient, Sam headed straight into Shepherd's outpatient program, Pathways. We stayed there until March 20th, when he was discharged early due to COVID19. Since then, we have been at our home in Barnardsville, NC working on our therapy routine every day.

Basically, Sam is relearning everything. Walking, talking, eating, drinking, math, memory, colors...you name it and it was affected. Brain injuries, unlike broken bones or surgeries, have no time frame for recovery. No guarantees at all really. There's always the possibility of regression or stalling. Maybe you'll be able to gain ground back or maybe the stall will end...maybe not. It is the pinnacle of unknown, of uncertainty.

At Shepherd, we were told two things. 1) How you (the patient) are today is not how it will be forever. 2) The people who continue to work on their recovery continue to recovery. It is my personal belief that Sam is going to make a miraculous recovery. There are so many reasons but here are two main ones. 1) It's already been miraculous and shows no signs of stopping!! He improves in so many ways every single day. We're talking tiny bits, little baby steps, but the improvement is steady and he NEVER QUITS! 2) I've seen Sam do everything at some point during this last year. He's talked, walked, ran, fed himself, done math, read, etc. The ABILITY is there and that's what could have been taken away by his injury. But it's still there! Not all the time, of course. Some days are stronger than others. The way I see it, if the ability is there, then we work on controlling and strengthening that ability. Then, as time passes, Sam will be able to access and use it on his terms.

When I originally created this GoFundMe, it was specifically for 3 pieces of equipment. Through fundraising and a generous donation from the vibration plate company, we have will soon own all of these!! What an accomplishment! I'm writing this section on 1/31/21, 18 months after Sam's injury. As he continues to improve and he is able to do more, we identify new tools that either weren't originally available for trial or he previously wasn't able to use these tools.  While this is excellent in the fact that Sam is gaining more and more function each day, it does mean that we will need to continue to fundraise to purchase the new equipment that is helping him.  Right now, I believe it will just be one more piece but I don't know exactly what the future holds. It could be that we are constantly fundraising to keep up with Sam's improvement...a blessing and a curse, right? While I don't know what's in store for us, I can say with 1000% certainty that, if it's something that Sam needs, I'll do whatever it takes to get it for him! I know that our community will stand behind us and that it will happen when it's meant to happen!!

We are currently raising funds to purchase Sam a hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber. Our wonderful team at Apex Brain Centers (https://apexbraincenters.com/) created an opportunity for us. HBOT has been on my radar since the beginning. I tried to get Sam into the chamber at Mission Hospital but was unsuccessful. It's one of those treatments that have broad, systematic benefits but, unfortunately, is only utilized in the medical system for a few ailments. It's a shame since it has virtually zero side effects, mainly clogged ears for a brief period, and can give amazing results. I mean, it's just crazy! A lot of anoxic brain injuries occur when a child is being born and, if the facility has a chamber, they will use it on the newborn and there are significant improvements. BUT they won't even consider using it on an adult with an anoxic injury...mind boggling!!

I could go on and on about how our medical system is broken but I also know that the majority already knows this. Preaching to the choir and all that. I will say that I'm hopeful for the future of HBOT because of Covid. As we learn more, we are seeing that the long term effects of Covid are extremely similar to brain injury. As the world looks for treatments, people are turning to HBOT and it's helping their recovery. It's my hope that the medical community recognizes these benefits, acknowledge the correlation between Covid and brain injury, change their views on how and when HBOT can be used and it will become a treatment that is utilized to its fullest AND covered by insurance.
I'm getting off topic and, while I am hopeful for HBOT's future, these changes won't happen fast enough to benefit Sam.

Buying a personal chamber is expensive; think like buying a new car. Before I started fundraising or even truly considering it, I wanted to see exactly what benefits Sam would get. Again, this is a systematic treatment so I knew there would be benefits but I needed to weigh them with the expense. Apex bought a chamber for their office so I reached out to see their thoughts. 1) When you what information, you go to the pros. They spend their lives immersed in learning about the brain and how to help it recover. Plus, you know, they're doctors and have the training and experience to understand the research in a way that I don't (yet!). 2) They had already worked with Sam and helped us identify other tools to purchase. I had asked about other equipment and they had told me 'no' on some very expensive pieces so I know they're not just trying to sell me stuff. (Basically, I trust them.) Dr. Trayford thought Sam would benefit and offered us a discounted rate to do a trial.

Instead of fundraising, I pulled money from my savings so we could jump on it. (Plus, I don't like to ask for help before I'm absolutely sure. If I'm going to ask, I want to give specifics so everyone is comfortable and confident that their contribution is being put to good use.)  Sam has completed 22 sessions and we are seeing some wonderful results! Besides seeing results, we're seeing the most improvement in the areas that have been the hardest for Sam: speech and vision. I went into more detail in an update posted in mid-January but his ability to control his mouth and turn on his voice has dramatically increased! If it takes $22,000 to have a conversation with my husband again, I consider that money incredibly well spent!!

As far as the  money side of it, I'm using $22,000 because that is the price of this unit: https://www.oxyhealth.com/vitaeris-320.html This is the chamber that we have been using at Apex and, right now, what we would need to buy since I have to go in with Sam during his treatment. It will take us a while to raise these funds so there is a chance that we will be able to drop down a size, saving ~$5,000. Sam might be at a totally different point when we get there, not needing me to be with him, but we'll have to wait and see. The goal is currently set at $27,169 because I'm unable to reset our 'funds raised' part. $5169 is what we raised and spent on the laser and mini-stim unit + $22,000 (Vitaeris 320 HBOT chamber) = $27,169. As always, I'll add  in anything sent via VenMo (@PaintForkFarm), PayPal ([email redacted]), and cash/checks when I do updates. I'm also creating another type of fundraiser which will be posted soon.

Since VibePlate is sending us the free unit and we were already fundraising for that, we are starting this campaign off with a nice chunk already raised! Right now here's where we stand:
$440 (GoFundMe) + $140 (VenMo) + $3408 (Checks) + $70 (Cash) = $4,058 or 18% complete!! Woot, woot!!

COMPLETED  and PURCHASED!!!!!!

At the end of June 2020, Sam went to see the functional neurologists at Apex Brain Centers in Asheville, NC  for a week's therapy intensive. While there, Drs. Trayford and Tyler were able to trial equipment from their 'toolbox' to see what, if any, worked well for Sam. They identified 3 pieces of equipment that showed very promising results: the Shed Light laser, vibration plate and mini-stim. I knew we would have to crowd source the funds so I opted to focus on one piece at a time.

As of 11/20/20, we finished off the laser section of our campaign! I'm keeping the description in case folks are interested.

I decided to start with the Shed Light laser because it is the most versatile. Because I won't be able to explain it very well, here's a very brief explanation I pulled from the professionals.

"Laser acupuncture can be done very quickly and easily with the right tools and significant changes have been noted in the research when done correctly. PBM (photobiomodulation) Therapy will, with a BROAD spectrum of safety and efficacy, stabilize cells/neurons via enhancing mitochondrial function, improving ion channel signaling pathways, reducing inflammation, and stabilizing membrane structures. PBM will promote a positive epigenetic change via early response genes and stimulate progenitor stem cells; along with growth factors that promote neurogenesis and synaptogenesis.

Laser can do the following:

-Accelerate cellular reproduction and growth.
-Expedite wound healing by stimulating fibroblast development in damaged tissue.
-Increases enzyme output, oxygenation of cells, immune response, and general metabolic activity.
-Reduces fibrous scar tissue formation from cuts, burns, and other traumas.
-Reduces swelling and inflammatory pain in the joints and tissue.
-Stimulates blood and lymph circulation throughout the body.
-Maximizes nerve function and speeds recover from nerve damage."

1/31/2021:

VibePlate reached out and is sending Sam a FREE UNIT!! The funds raised will purchase the mini-stim unit and the remainder will go towards a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber. Woot, woot!! Here is the description of the vibration plate. As we never 'officially' raised funds for the mini-stim, I never wrote a description for that unit. Once it arrives, I will do a video highlighting it.

We crushed our goal for the Shed Light laser and are moving onto the vibration plate!! I've updated the total goal and want to give some information on why vibration is important and which model we've decided to purchase. Please remember that I am NOT a trained PT/OT/doctor/etc. Everything I discuss, I've learned from watching Sam's therapy sessions, extensive online research and discussion with medical professionals. This is my personal understanding and is in no way professional advice. I do highly recommend you researching these tools for yourself. We are using them to treat Sam's brain injury but almost all can be used for other issues or even just for basic wellness.

Vibration is an amazing, versatile tool! It increases bone density, blood circulation, muscles strength, flexibility and decreases recovery time. Nothing there not to like, right? Sam has both muscle tone and spasticity, the difference being that spasticity is velocity dependent while tone is not. (IE: With spasticity, the faster you try to stretch a muscle, the more resistance occurs. With tone, this is not the case.)  Vibration helps relax and loosen his muscles. While we were at Shepherd, I noticed that I was able to get Sam's left arm to relax from the 90 degree bent position by gently shaking it while I stretched it down. I mentioned this to his therapy team, honestly expecting them to think I was crazy for going around shaking Sam about. Back then, I was very timid in thinking I could offer anything to the process so, imagine my surprise, when they thanked me and immediately opted to start him on vibration therapy!

They tried different styles: wands, horizontal, multi-directional, different size platforms, etc. There were varying degrees of success. The wands were alright but most of the multi-directional platforms had Sam freaking out! (We believe this was most likely due to where he was in his recovery at that time. When Sam used a multi-directional platform at APEX, he was totally fine.) He did amazing on the Vibe Plate, which is vertical vibration, so he spent a lot of time on that, particularly during his outpatient time at Pathways.

As I stated, while at APEX, Sam did fine  on the multi-directional platform. This is the unit that Dr. Trayford recommended to us and is less expensive than the one we will be purchasing.  As always, I want to be transparent in our decision making, especially since this choice is adding more to the cost. I decided on the Vibe Plate for a few, key reasons.

1) During his recovery, Sam has never, not once, had an adverse reaction to vertical vibration. While I believe that period of freaking out is behind us, there is always the possibility that it could return. Of course, one day, he might have an adverse reaction to vertical vibration but I feel more comfortable picking a 'hasn't happened' option over a 'happened frequently and it was bad!' option.
2) Vertical vibration is the most natural movement (walking, running, jumping, etc). It is safer and less stressful than side-to-side or circular vibrations. Our goal is to remind Sam's body how to move naturally.
3) Versatility! The Vibe Plate is a larger platform which allows us to do more exercises and therapy than the other options. In addition to standing, Sam will be able to do yoga, work on hands and knees, side and back step, even lay down on this platform! Other options would limit him to standing, kneeling or kneeling on the ground with his hands on the platform. Additionally, the larger size of the platform gives Sam a larger area to work. This allows us to be safer vs a smaller area. Sam and I work incredibly well together and can pretty much make things work 90% of the time. BUT, if there is an option to increase the safety for BOTH of us, we have to take it!

The increase in versatility and safety vastly outweighs the additional expense!
