Some people make horrible decisions and continue to live broken lives by those decisions. Some find strength enough to just break even and recover from it. Then there's Marshall, a person who refuses to be bound by his greatest failures and then electrifies the world around him with his brightness and the truths that he's learned about himself. He's humbly showcased his character defects and his worst choices to build a platform of success and hope, both for himself and those lives he touches. There's a journey in this man that's happening and to see how he's gotten to where he is, and to see where he's going, you have to see where he was and know what drives him. Marshall started life as a rambunctious boy, full of mischief. He deeply struggled with learning setbacks and ADD and by middle school, he found drugs and alcohol to both express and suppress himself. Witnessing the loss of childhood friends, Marshall became lost with his want for belonging and to matter, although he didn't know what that would mean for himself until much later. By his late twenties, his self destruction was evident and his family crumbled under the weight, he had lost all purpose and hope. In a drug fueled excursion, he committed his crime and By God's grace, the victim survived. Marshall was charged with attempted first degree murder and sentenced to twenty two years of confinement in a state prison. 

During his first week in prison, a place without hope, he was told he had to fit in to survive. In the process, he lashed out against the wrong person and became hunted by a prison gang. He was sent to solitary confinement and initially his world grew even darker. However, there was a fire inside of him that was waiting to be lit. This led to his greatest breakthrough, although it would take some time. It started with him asking the very first, self reflective question about his belonging, "How did I get here?" Marshall realized that his purpose was the culmination of 28 years of terrible decisions and now, in this moment, he could change this experience from a tomb into a womb and rebirth his life. He had the power to become seen and heard, to find purpose and to matter. And so he did. The best Marshall was yet to come and he started to find his way.

For Marshall, he had to become entirely humbled. His purpose started in his humility. He sought forgiveness from everyone he knew, his family, his children, his friends and so many others, to include even his arresting officer, Officer Johnson, who has now been a reoccurring visitor for him. In his efforts toward humility, he was even awarded seven years back on his sentence. There was more to do, however. Marshall found a foothold as a pillar in his prison community. This purpose became the thing he was looking for his whole life. He started helping people through addiction recovery, reentry counseling, restorative justice principles, public speaking and other contributions. In his new birth, he found a life he never thought he could have. Starting as a kid with learning problems, Marshall has now earned a business degree and has cleared his path to be a student of the Social Sciences at the University of Washington. He's mastered self confidence and with it, mathematics, a far cry from his broken, codependent former self. 

His contributions keep growing. He's a featured writer for HumanMe.org, has been interviewed by National Public Radio, Texas Standard, and has a clear vision of developing a new narrative in county jails using the restorative justice and public speaking skills he's crafted. His goal is ensuring others have the understanding that life, even in confinement, can begin anew through self awareness. He even hopes to teach formal college courses on the subject of life reclamation. As a self discovered life coach, Marshall believes in the power of positive energy, compassion, forgiveness, self worth and he truly is a conduit for a life better lived.
