The Stray Animals of Spain S.O.S
I hope you are sitting comfy, as I need to tell you my story... enough of it, so that you can understand why I am asking for your kindness... my goal is not to spin you a sad story but to make you part of my journey so that you are able to understand the reasoning behind this Go Fund Me request.
At a young age, I had a passion for dogs and their wellbeing, always bringing strays home! I managed to find my way to Santorini, Greece where I experienced first hand, the terrible hardship of stray dogs and the terrible fate that some of them face every day.
I tried to save as many as I could, it broke my heart, but I didn’t want to give up... I wanted to establish myself there full time but unfortunately, it was not meant to be and as a foreigner, it proved difficult on my own to secure the help I needed to permanently set up a rescue.. which was then done by local people afterwards.
When I returned back to England, I felt lost but still decided to cling onto that dream, in the hope, that one day I can make it happen. I then decided to turn my hobby into a business and became a successful dog trainer and behaviourist and I have a well-known business that I love and that I find rewarding. I love helping people, helping dogs be the best they can be, and helping owners to be the best dog parents they can be... Rescue’s are my niche, having always had rescue dogs & cats myself, I left Greece with 2 of each… I have also helped numerous of my friends find and match rescue dogs, cats & a pony here in the UK.
While I was doing this, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. My world came crashing down and I felt alone and vulnerable. I decided that I had to fight and had a lumpectomy done...
I was in year two (2018), hoping I might have beaten this, when I was diagnosed again for a second time with the same cancer, this time it took so much from me, a second diagnosis totally floored me. I had to have a mastectomy but I kept telling myself that I needed to stand strong and not be defeated but slowly saw my dream disappearing in front of my eyes... and in the midst of all that, homelessness twice... thank God for friends...
After all of the emotion, I continued working, never giving up, picking myself up and I knew I had to restart that fire in me that went out... my classes and my clients have kept me going. For that, I will always be grateful.
When Covid19 hit the world, it made me think about my life & work here in the UK. I really feel that I can be far more valuable setting up a rescue & help these poor animals, as well as setting up my dog training school as I have here.
I decided that I do not want to give up on my dream of helping the animals in Spain. I need it to prove to myself that I can still have a life that is giving, rewarding, and selfless. I have been going to Spain 3/4 times a year for 10+ years and there it is so much easier to set up a rescue.
I would love the opportunity to set up a dog rescue and dog training school in Spain. Unlike the UK, dogs are not valued much and the suffering is great... very much similar to the circumstances in Greece. It is heart-breaking. I want a chance to save lives, give hope, and offer safety and warmth. Those that do not get adopted will be living their lives in peace and happiness with me.
As you can appreciate, getting a mortgage while being a surviving cancer patient is not always an easy feat. I need a suitable property, to enable me to provide both these services. Having been made homeless twice I need the security for the animals and myself that we will always have a home and the land to make this possible. Most “Finca’s” have olive/almond/fruit trees on the land so we can use that to help raise money as well.
Beyond this, the dogs will need to be cared for. Have more than adequate living space, suitable for summer and winter... I will explain both parts of the business I want to set up.
Firstly, the dog rescue... I will be traveling as far as I can to help the neediest dogs. To provide them with veterinary care and a safe place to call home... I will need indoor and outdoor kennels. A covered area for outside shelter and play. I also want to offer them a doggie pool, so that they can keep cool and have fun. Adoption will be strict, but for good reason. Owners will be invited for some personal matchmaking and training for a few days. Those who cannot make it over will go through online dog training sessions, including vetting to make sure that they are well-matched and suited.
The dog training school. I basically take my business and base it in Spain and offer 121 puppy and dog training, Puppy classes & an enclosed field that I can rent out for people to let their pups/dogs have off-lead exercise. This should also help me fund day to day expenses...
I need a property of approximately 8000sq meters, with the option to build what I need. Also, with a little house to keep me, of course!!
I am putting myself out there... I am taking this leap of faith in the hope that you can help me save countless of dog's lives and give them a life that they deserve... the chance to be happy and be the best that they can be... give them a chance to feel loved and cared for in a world that sometimes does them harm, in a world that all they know is hunger, pain, suffering. I want to do my part to bring happiness to their lives and YOU can help me to help them...
I talk a lot about dogs but anyone that knows me also knows that I will help any animal in need.
