Age, time and weather have taken their toll on this historic treasure of Kennebunk, Maine. Restoration began in 2018 and we are reaching out to the community and architectural lovers to join us in these efforts.
Thomas Murphy's 1978 book, The Wedding Cake House the World of George W. Bourne, it described the difficulties and exorbitant expense for an owner to maintain the decorative trim work and predicted the demise of the elaborate carvings. We hope to prove this wrong with community support.
All previous owners loved and cherished The Wedding Cake House, but in the past years age had taken it's toll on James Hunt Barker and upkeep could not be maintained. The House is now currently owned by his family whose first goal is to preserve the beloved House. They hope to restore The House and open it to the public in a way that it can support itself; "so the public can do more than drive by, but love the house inside and out."
Donations are being asked to support ONLY the exterior work on the buttresses, spires and trim of The Wedding Cake House. Local contractors, carpenters, painters, and wood turners, along with the guidance of Hunt Edwards, make up the team repairing and replacing this intricate work. Balancing cost and durability some modern composite materials (approved by Kennebunk Historic Society and used by boat builders) are being used to replace parts where traditional material is overall weak. Although, the majority of the material now being used is a mix of old growth white pine and mahogany wood.
We invite you to be part of the preservation of this historical home for future generations to appreciate. Our goal is to complete the current restoration for the 200 year anniversary of the Wedding Cake House in 2025-2026.
