My sister had a lifelong passion for motorcycles but never had the opportunity to pursue it. A couple of months ago, many things came together to create that opportunity, and she saught safety-focused riding classes to minimize the risk. Unfortunately, the school she found seemed more focused on moving students through than making sure they were ready. She expressed concerns about progressing too fast, but those concerns were dismissed, and she had an accident in class, which resulted in 7 fractures across 3 bones in both wrists.
She spent a week in the hospital, including surgery on one wrist, and might need surgery on the other. While there, she was shocked to find out that her insurance covers very little of her bills. With no coverage for a rehabilitation facility, she went home to fend for herself with one disabled hand and minimal use of some fingers on the other.
Thanks to many amazing people supporting her, she was able to get back to working from home 2 weeks after her accident, in a vocal capacity only. However, in addition to missing more than 2 week’s pay, the medical hit will be significant. It will be weeks before we know just how bad, but we already know it is well into five figures, which will surely drive her to bankruptcy without significant help.
Amanda turns 49 today, August 29th. In years past, she has asked for donations to charities for her birthday. She also donates to similar requests for friends, family, and even many strangers! This year, I ask for donations to help her avoid bankruptcy, so she can return to doing good for others sooner. I am starting with a goal of $10,000, which is certainly the low end of what she needs.
Whether we get there or not, she is still celebrating being alive as well as all the love and care of her friends and family, dedicating so much of their time and energy, helping her with the daily life functions most of us take for granted.
