Support Educators Around the World w/ Changemaking

Donation protected
We are asking you to support our Changemaking project in South Africa, Jamaica, and Tanzania. Our plan is to complete a Changemaking project focused on inspiring and engaging learners in government schools from both urban and rural schools by connecting, planning, and implementing activities in schools. These projects will focus on engaging students in literacies to support success after graduation.

We are asking for $3000* to ensure teachers are able to attend the Changemaker Symposium being held in the respective countries.

Because the teachers will need to travel to the Changemaker event and there is no funding for available for them from their schools, we are hoping you will be willing to give and support getting teachers to the Changemaking event:
$500 Food for events (hosting a lunch at the school on the day of observations and support, providing lunch for the Changemaker Symposium, and providing dinner for our out of town guests)
$500 Transportation and possible lodging (cars and mileage to get to the event)
*If we are able to raise additional funds, we will be able to invite more teachers to the event.

Here are stories from Tanzanian teachers we want to support:
I am very happy to be a member of this program. I have been in this field for almost three years now, so in those three years I have gained a lot of knowledge and skills. I was inspired by one of my teacher in my school when I was studying ordinary secondary. Also I had a desire to impact knowledge to the young one to another hoping that, through this poverty could be eliminated.

I'm very greatly appreciate to be among of this program which I believe it's contributions will be much worth to enhance my professional. I have been teaching for six years now,  and it has been an awesome experience to fight with the challenge of ignorance, but I still believe we have much more to do. I expect to get more and to give something I have as we were share among in this program. I would like to appreciate everybody's efforts in dealing with educating  our community.

I interested to work with others in order to remove challenges in teaching and learning activity . Thus the Changemakers program will change altitude of teaching and make teaching activity to be perfect. So I need more experience with other co workers to  work with in order to change the altitude of learning system in Tanzania.

I found myself interested after being told about Changemaker project as far as my career is concerned and am also so interested and inspired about bringing change into the world as I believe change begins with me and it is an endless process. Also as the teacher I am expecting to exchange new ideas, opinions, challenges and way forward towards realizing the positive change that we want. I am very excited to have contact with you and more conversations.

I am interested to be a part of your team because your project deals with issues and challenges facing people. Me as a facilitator, I'm facing a lot of challenges in this field as some of my students are orphans, some living far from the school, some have health problems and some are coming from poor family. I hope working with you will equip me with knowledge and skills, on how to design various ways in order to change the situation. As long as both of us are educators, I believe I will be sharpen like iron sharpens iron. Moreover, I feel I am responsible for making a big move in the field of education because I will bring changes in the society. I think it our duty as people sharing life in this work to make our future better, because our future is not only ours. I look forward to your positive response.

Here are stories from some of the Jamaican teachers we want to support:
Jamaica is a poor developing nation with major economic hardships and financial constraints. As such, the public school system is affected by the limited resources. Major issues are : overcrowded classrooms and double-shift systems due to insufficient schools; shortcomings in teaching and learning quality (limitations in teacher preparation programs, insufficient support for new service teachers and lack of continuous professional development); inequitable educational access for all children (as generally the higher performers are enrolled in private institutions); lower enrollment at the higher levels of the secondary system and; poor sector governance.

I have an interest and desire to better serve students and enhance their outcomes. Focus and continued efforts to enhance access, equity, and quality of education for all students amidst economical and financial limitations.

Here are stories from some of the South African teachers we want to support:

I am what I am today because of the following: I was appointed as a junior teacher in 1992 but my job description was of the principal . My former principal by then was at the back giving instructions and I performed very well not knowing that she was preparing me to be a future principal. Even though it was not easy.

I have always liked reading and debating during my school days. The English language has always been close to my heart. When I enrolled as an educator I chose English and Art as my major subjects at the college. I then taught English at high school in Grades 10, 11 and 12. In 2013 I joined the Primary School where I also taught English in Grade 7. I then felt a need to further my studies towards the degree of B. Ed (Hons) in language education. I was so captivated by the content in the degree courses such that immediately after the completion of the degree I enrolled for the Master of Education degree in language education. My keen interest in the discipline of language education saw me through to a PhD degree which I attained this year, 2018 in September.

My experiences as a learner in high school made me want to become an educator. Firstly, I had educators who were very much inspired to change the lives of their learners. Secondly, their teaching and learning strategies were entertaining and they made us (learners) think that they were having fun while teaching. In other words, they made teaching attractive to young people like myself.  Another reason that made me want to become an educator is the fact that schools that are situated in most poor areas of the country continue to attract teachers who are not up to standard and sometimes even unqualified teachers. In short, I chose to become an educator so that I can improve the lives of ordinary South Africans especially those who continue to be marginalized by the system.

To be a teacher is not a career, but a vocation. When you look around the world , you find different professionals who had been moulded from the hands of a teacher. I became a teacher because I had passion and love to work with people, to guide them, to show them the path to follow. Someone had moulded me to be what I am today, so I too, have to do the same to others. You know I am so proud to see someone being something in life, learning more, having more money than me ,then I pat my shoulders and said ,'Give success to the work of my hands'. Yes it is a challenging vocation but to me this is work I enjoy the most.
