Support March for Science NYC's climate workshop

Donation protected
March for Science NYC  is a volunteer organization dedicated to:

1. The open access of scientific information to the general public.
2. The use of science for the common good and in the preservation of an informed democracy.
3. The protection of human and environmental rights.

We are a team of scientists, activists, designers, and technologists whose common goal is Educate to Empower -- to advocate for scientific solutions grounded in social justice.  Since 2018, we’ve produced year-round programming bridging science outreach and activism, including our annual march and expo, voter education events, and biweekly fireside chats about our experiences organizing our workplaces. We’ve organized scientists to attend local climate strikes, registered science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students to vote, and organized graduate students against tax increases.

For the past year, we have focused much of our efforts on climate organizing, and in New York City, September is climate month. The climate crisis is here, and another, healthier, more sustainable world is possible if we all fight for it.  We hope to educate and advocate for not just climate solutions, but climate justice.

What does this mean? Climate justice must be grounded in racial justice. Environmental racism has long damaged Black, brown, and Indigenous communities who are now on the frontlines of the climate crisis. We must uplift the voices of these communities and allow them to lead.

With our friends at 1 Freedom for All, a youth-led social justice organization that fights for the fundamental human right to racial, economic, and environmental justice, we are developing a curriculum that will discuss how we can do so. Together, we will hold an eight-week workshop on climate justice with students who represent 1 Freedom for All at their high schools. We will build students’ scientific literacy through regular reading groups and discussions of topics including environmental racism, food sovereignty, abolition, and climate solutions like the Green New Deal and Red Deal. Our weekly discussions will serve as the basis for educational videos and local advocacy campaigns that the student will create on these topics that will be free and available for public viewing.

Your funds will support
- Infrastructure required to host the workshops, including: purchase of journal articles or material to share with the students; AV equipment for workshop participants to allow them to participate in weekly calls and filming of educational videos remotely; Zoom Pro to facilitate webinars

- Creation of educational materials (tool kits, videos, social media campaigns, etc)

- Support for local climate advocacy campaigns led by the students, including mutual aid through 1 Freedom for All’s Community Fridge program

Additional contributions will be used to support future public science outreach events held by 1 Freedom for All & March for Science NYC.

March for Science NYC is a New York state nonprofit corporation in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status.
