Roots and Petals Series

WEBSITE: dannystlartist.com Hello, I'm Danny McGinnist Jr. I'm a professional artist based in Oakland, CA. Since COVID-19 hit art has been difficult to sell. For me as an artist, low materials have been a concern, especially because I am looking forward to completing a really important project. Originally I planned to execute an entire series this 2021 fall semester where I attended SFAI. Unfortunately, my institute had shut down and went out of business because of institutional debt. With little notice, the artist was forced out of their studios and student homes. I was one of those students. After, Covid-19 went into effect. I had to move out of my student home to two different cities. I decided to focus on my profession and business because of my loss of funds after moving from SFAI. During the time I collaborated with Washington University, Cisco Meraki, and other artists. I manage to save for bills and future flights. Overall, I’m mostly focused on my debut series Roots and Petals. I don’t have enough in my personal budget anymore to continue the Roots and Petals series. I believe this series will open more opportunities for me as a person, student, and artist. I am hoping to use this series to get back into college next semester, and also to apply for more artist grants! Roots and Petals will soon be an exhibition once the community is safer from COVID-19 and fires. I really need as much help as I can get to complete this series. I am also open to donations such as medium to large canvas donations. I only use “Golden” fluid paints. Also in need of watercolors(A lot of watercolors). I’ll be using paperboard, loose canvas, and wood for painting surfaces. Surfaces have to be at least 30x30(inch)and at most 50x70(inch). I’ll need some frames also. I need a camera keycard for Livestream to paint live from my camera so that you and others can keep up with my process. Everything has to be brand new if donations are possible. Thank you for reading and for your support! I hope to see you at the Roots and Petals exhibition soon! Here’s more about Roots and Petals and me as an artist! Roots and Petals Series As flowers grow from the dirt, fight for light, absorb water, and rebound from forces, we similarly persevere through adversities to create our own legacies. Petals exist because roots pursue life and choose vitality. The Roots and Petals series celebrates the history, community, culture, and the evolution of identity. Roots and Petals is a visual memoir about the communities that nourished our foundations, gave us our roots, and, in one way or another, encouraged our petals to unravel. Through the reconstruction of childhood photos, Danny McGinnist Jr. confronts his past to control his narrative, present his memoir, and pay homage to the people and places that helped form his truth. Roots and Petals is an ongoing series, diverse in technique and mediums. The painting styles vary throughout the series, reflecting McGinnist’s personal relationship with his subject matter. Cake, Glue, RM, and living Inside, are four pieces created on canvas, paper, and recycled surfaces. Roots and Petals use materials as a means of storytelling -- in some cases, the material mirrors the memories. Living Inside was created with the paperboard found on the back of a 25x36 sketchbook. As a child, McGinnist would practice his art on old notebooks. Now in his professional career, McGinnist has found comfort in creating on paperboards and other overlooked materials. Danny puts forth an entirely original series about the beauty of Black culture and the strength of communities. In 2018, Danny moved to San Francisco to pursue an education at SFAI. While living on his own, Danny gained a new perspective on the importance of community and purpose. The desire to showcase his surroundings and honor his narrative became the foundation for Roots and Petals. While beginning with his own story, Roots and Petals stems beyond personal experiences and reveals the beauty, connectivity, and evolution of Black communities. The paintings speak life into memories and offer an entrance into perspectives that have gone unobserved.
