FLOKI'S STORY

Floki is our 16-month-old Hungarian Vizsla pup who came into our lives like a whirlwind of ginger craziness in June 2019 at 8 weeks old and we've never looked back since. You can follow her story up to now over on her very own Instagram page: Floki the Scottish Vizsla .

Recently Floki took suddenly unwell with sickness, retching, choking, excessive drooling, and complete lack of energy to the point of sleeping nearly all the time.which was extremely worrying.

After a couple of visits to the vets, she was eventually admitted to the University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital for further tests etc to understand what was going on as there was no obvious reason which could be found for her symptoms or lack of improvement.

After numerous tests/scans/x-rays we’re at the point the team looking after her believe it’s highly likely the prognosis is Floki has an incurable condition know as Viszla Inflammatory Polymyopathy (VIP). You can read more about this devastating muscle disease here.

She has today (17/09/20) successfully made it through surgery despite increased risks as she also has developed aspiration pneumonia which is a common ongoing risk with this condition. Today’s surgery involved the neurologist conducting an EMG test and then taking biopsies from the muscles in and around her head to be sent away. She also had a feeding tube fitted directly to her stomach as she’s not been able to swallow food due to the damage to her esophagus and larynx from the constant retching and gagging she's been suffering with.

Floki will now remain in the ICU for the next few weeks whilst she recovers and we begin trialling different treatment protocols involving steroids and immune suppressants. Due to the current restrictions in place as a result of the coronavirus, we’re not able to visit unless by exception or if Floki is well enough to come outside which may not be possible for a while following today’s surgery and also how she responds to treatment.

Viszla Inflammatory Polymyopathy (VIP) is a life-limiting disease with no cure and ongoing treatment is required in order to support Floki with having the best chance possible. We are extremely grateful to the team at the University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital for the wonderful care they have and will continue to provide Floki in the coming weeks and months. This, however, comes at a significant cost, and before we even reached the point of today’s surgery our pet insurance limit had been surpassed.

In order to support Floki on her road to recovery, we would MASSIVELY APPRECIATE  any financial support you would be willing to offer to give our beautiful girl the best possible chance to make it through this challenging time. Every donation you give will go 100% towards the cost of her continued treatment for VIP, including some of what we’ve already talked about above. We will be providing regular updates here and over on her Instagram page.

Floki means so much to us and has made such a positive impact on our lives in such a short time and in far too many ways to mention here. But for me (Cat - Vizsla mum and proud!) Floki is my running buddy. We started our journey as complete newbie runners together back at the start of summer with the Couch to 5k programme and it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done! Going out running with her at my side is so much fun and even on those days when I’m having the most awful run, I look down at my gorgeous girl and shout like a madwoman ‘we can do this Floki!’ And we always do :) so to have your support as we #fightforfloki now would mean more than I can put into words.

Thank you for your support, pawsitivity, and generosity from Floki and her family (Cat, Andrew, Danny & Jack).
