Shirley Parish Hall Commemorative Plaque

We have been overwhelmed by the generous response to our fundraising appeal for the Shirley Parish Hall plaque and would like to thank everyone who has donated so far.  We will be closing this GoFundMe page on Friday 11th December and - once the costs of designing, manufacturing and installing the plaque at the Parish Hall are paid - the Shirley Local History Group will put any surplus monies raised towards another of the Spitfire Makers commemorative plaques in the Shirley area (see link below for further details).

Shirley Local History Group, part of the FRIENDS OF ST. JAMES PARK charity, are raising money for a commemorative plaque to be placed at Shirley Parish Hall in St.James Road, Southampton.

The plaque will commemorate the women and men who worked in the Hall during WW2 in a 'hidden' factory making parts for Spitfire  jettison fuel tanks and air filters.  This was one of several buildings in our local area of Shirley that were requisitioned or taken over for production of plane parts following the bombing of the Supermarine factories in the town in September 1940.

The Shirley Local History Group are working with other volunteers from the Spitfire Makers Charitable Trust, The Supermariners and Solent Sky Museum and the team at St-James-by-the-Park to install the plaque.

Your kind donation will be used to cover the costs of design, manufacture and installation of a plaque at Shirley Parish Hall to honour the many Spitfire Makers both in Southampton and beyond.
