Santa Needs A New Sleigh

Santa Needs A New Sleigh for Christmas

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Hank Brennan, also known as “Santa Hank”, and I’ve called North Vancouver home since 1995.

In 2008, I created a non-profit “Recycling for Charity” program out of my own garage to help the homeless and needy families in our communities. Seven days a week I drive my 1998 Dodge Grand Voyager collecting bottles, cans and other recyclables from supportive folks and businesses on the North Shore. With the money raised from these recyclables, I purchase gift cards from our local coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, and grocery stores and put them directly into the hands of our community’s less fortunate, including those who are homeless.

I’ve now reached a point where I could use a little help from you, as my Grand Voyager (Santa’s Sleigh) has reached its near end-of-life. My van is 22 years old, has 410,000 km and has started to burn oil - and would cost more to fix that it’s worth. I need to replace it with a larger vehicle to match the increasing number of daily pickups from a rapidly growing roster of contributors.

I’ve researched multiple vans and have selected the Ford Transit 250 as the one best suited for our needs because it's big and can hold a heck of a lot more cans and bottles. My hope is to raise enough money to purchase a new van in time for Christmas Eve.

Here’s a little more for you to know about me and my recycling program.

Recycling for Charity had humble beginnings - a one-man operation, so to speak. I worked as a special events videographer and in my spare time I’d collect refundable bottles and cans from family and friends in a small van, and use the money raised to purchase gift cards to give to less fortunate people in the surrounding area.

As my collections increased, I had to purchase the larger (used) Dodge Grand Voyager. This also corresponded with the launch of Hank’s Christmas Glitter website, designed to have a greater reach into our community and increase our pickups. Boy, did that ever work well for us!

The folks(contributors) that helped start the program were incredibly enthusiastic and the word got around quickly and I began spending more and more time driving around to do pick-ups. The local TV and Radio stations - and then the national networks! - began to help publicize the Santa’s Recycling for Charity program, and it then became a seven-day a week endeavour. I’ve loved every kilometer logged, as I’ve met so many extraordinary and generous people along this journey. I wish I could convey to you the appreciation and the hope I see every day from those folks that receive a gift card or Christmas stocking (during the Holidays).

We know that during these trying times of Covid-19 it may be difficult for you to donate, so if you’re unable to, please consider sharing this post with your family and friends via social media.

Together We’re Making A Difference… One Can at a Time. Every Day… All Year Round.

Thanking you in advance.
