Help Preserve Hāmākualoa
Hāmākualoa Open Space is the largest publicly accessible wilderness area on Maui's North Shore. It is the gateway to Pe'ahi (Jaws) and has deep cultural roots in the community. Mālama Hāmākua has partnered with Maui County to help remove junk and invasive species, and provide access for traditional uses and responsible recreational activities. It takes a lot of work and resources to do this and you can help Mālama Hāmākua to purchase needed equipment and fund a kahu to watch over the land.
Phase 1 is to install cameras at the entrances so we can discourage dumping of cars and junk as well as find out how people are currently using the area; and begin a contract for a "kahu/ranger” to monitor the camera footage and report / discourage illegal dumping. Phase 2 will focus on expanding management of illegal dumping and improvements to trails and safe public access.
Our funding goal for Phase 1 is $5,000. Our funding goal for Phase 2 is $10,000. Phase 2 will be our focus for 2021 but we hope to get started early in the year with this phase.
