Vaccinate a Village--UMBC Red Cross Club

The UMBC Red Cross Club is back again with our annual Vaccinate a Village fundraising campaign (but we're doing things a little different this year).
Vaccinate a Village is a fundraiser which collects money for the American Red Cross in collaboration with the Measles and Rubella Initiative. This money is used to fund MMR vaccines, provide monetary support for global vaccination campaigns, and train and mobilize volunteers.
In 2018 alone there were about 140,000 measles deaths globally with children under 5 making up the primary demographic experiencing mortality. Rubella, though less deadly than measles. can have devastating effects on pregnancies. Pregnant women who are infected with rubella are more likely to experience miscarriages, stillbirths, or give birth to an infant with congenital rubella syndrome- (CRS). Every year infants with CRS succumb to blindness, deafness and/or heart defects as a result of their condition.
Luckily, there is a very effective and cheap solution: the MMR vaccine. This vaccine costs about $1-$2 and has prevented approximately 23.2 million deaths from 2000-2018. The American Red Cross has played a significant role in this amazing feat.
Since the founding of the Measles and Rubella Initiative the American Red Cross has:
-Directly supported 123 vaccination campaigns in 46 countries worldwide.
-Contributed more than $181 million towards the purchase to the purchase of vaccines and materials
In the past 5 years the American Red Cross has:
-Trained more than 32,000 volunteers in social mobilization techniques
-Visited more than 6.8 million households to educate and encourage caregivers
-Helped to vaccinate more than 18 million children in Red Cross supported areas
Though we have made great progress there is still much work to be done. Now is the time more than ever to support public health efforts.
