1.15.20 Update from Robert about Michael:
"We met with the medical team at OHSU this week, and on their recommendation, we are taking Michael off all treatment. The reason he has been feeling so sick and having so much pain since before Thanksgiving is that the cancer has mutated and become much more aggressive. His liver is riddled with tumors and badly compromised. This means that he's not a candidate for the clinical trial, and that any treatment (such as chemo) would do more harm than good.
Our focus is now on ensuring his comfort and establishing the best possible quality of life. We met with a hospice team yesterday, and Michael is now in their care. It's good to have a team that will focus on his priorities and allow him to stay at home until the end. We do not have a specific prognosis, but it is clear that his remaining time will be measured in weeks, not months."

Michael has been actively fighting cancer since 2017. Cancer, however, is not what defines Michael or the legacy he leaves.
Anyone who has ever had the honor of meeting Michael knows his irresistibly charming southern drawl, the astonished way he clutches his pearls, and his ability to build meaningful and authentic connections. He is a tremendously skilled teacher and trainer, a fierce advocate for racial equity and social justice, a loving husband, and a loyal friend.
I invite you to share your support for Michael and Robert in order to offset a variety of expenses and to shower your love upon Michael in his remaining time.
