Collage needs your TLC!

(versió en català a continuació...)

What is Collage?
Hi, I’m Emilie, director and co-founder of Collage in Gràcia, Barcelona.
Collage is so much more than an English language academy; it's a place for children to shine and feel supported in their uniqueness, express their creativity, get messy, shake it all out, be curious, make new friends, and at the same time find joy and purpose in communicating in English.

The Collage community
This video (below) from our 13th Birthday celebration a few years ago shows the warmth, energy and love in the Collage community that we can’t wait to continue giving a physical  home for, as soon as Covid restrictions in Catalunya allow us to re-open our school (we're on our third lockdown now...). But after a full year of treading water in these difficult times, we need some TLC to help us stay strong.

Collage and the challenges from Covid-19
Since March 2020 we have not yet been able to be open for a full trimester. We are now on our third lockdown and doing all we can to transmit these same values in our online classes but as the many weeks pass it becomes clearer that Collage is a light that cannot go out and that needs to be able to shine in person!

Fifteen years of experience and all the heart in the world did not prepare us for Covid-19 and the multiple closures and restrictions that have kept coming between us and running our small business. Over the last year we’ve closed our doors when they told us to (again and again and again...) and moved online whenever possible, offering free storytelling and resources to all of our community;  we adapted timetables and our space to provide a safe learning environment; we moved around groups to keep our already small numbers even more reduced;

Our Collage Team
We reduced staff to keep costs low and I, as the director, have not received a salary in 8 months in order to try and keep Collage afloat in a panorama of no government help (check out academies unides  for all the great work they’ve been doing to try and change this!) and no time to grow and register more students with the constant closures.

We’ve tried and we’re trying, you better believe it!

Moving forward and keeping afloat
I have thought about closing, of course, but I always loop back around to the families that have stuck with us, to all our students who are so eager to learn and so present no matter what the circumstance, and to my incredible team of dedicated teachers who are in it 100%, giving it their all. This is what has kept me afloat that’s for sure.

We couldn’t have made it this far without our families and current students, though, of course, no one ever signs up for Collage wanting to put their 4 year-old in front of a screen for class… I get it! I wouldn't want to either.. This means we have lost many families and school groups who’ve understandably decided to take a pause during this time.

But the thing is: it’s a pause. Everyone wants to come back! The key is surviving until that time. When we can welcome back groups of young learners and fill our classrooms once again with smiles, laughter and hands-on learning.

Which is why now…. I’m turning to you
My community, Collage’s present and future community, and everyone who believes in and vouches for hands-on education and small businesses:  this is the time we need a little bit of much-needed TLC (Tender Loving Cash?) If you’ve ever been touched by Collage, supported by Collage, had a good laugh or passed a test with Collage, or if this campaign moves you in any way I hope you’ll consider giving a little bit. And I know that this is a hard time for many, and many of you are not in a position to help, but if you are, we’d greatly appreciate your support. (And if you can’t help monetarily, sharing this campaign would also be a great help!)

Cash donations will go to:
- Ensuring teachers all receive full pay and coverage rega
rdless of registration numbers
- Paying off accumulated debt due to multiple temporary closures of the space - rent and other typical business overheads
ensuring that we can cover immediate important costs for the space
- Some sort of salary for me (Emilie, director and co-founder of Collage. As you can see, this is always last on the list!)

Our goal is 7.000€ - not because this is the magic number that will save us forever, but because this is what we have calculated will help to make us through this challenging time. Making more would be a blessing; making less simply means we continue trucking on, accumulating debt like many, many other small businesses out there right now!

Thank you all for your support and love, in whatever form it comes! (We accept virtual hugs and postcards too)

Man, we can’t wait to throw you all a BIG party when all this is over!

Tothom vol tornar!
