Academy of Warren Community Build Playground

The Academy of Warren Foundation is raising money for the Academy of Warren Playground Project (AOWP2). The playground project is a grassroots effort with community members joining hands to provide a state-of-the-art playground not only for the children attending AOW, but for children in the surrounding area. This project is a unique concept as the ideas for its custom-designed playground are centered on the visions of AOW’s students. The dates for the playground build are set for May 17 through June 11, 2021.
The playground project is occurring in tandem with the revitalization of Academy of Warren’s entire campus. Remodeling details include approximately 100,000 square feet of interior updates. Thirty-six classrooms will undergo renovation to install smartboards, updated furniture, modern teaching equipment and new windows. Outdoor renovations include a 25,000-square-foot fieldhouse dome with a gym and indoor turf field, an outdoor athletic field and outdoor combination tennis and basketball court. A Discovery Park at the school’s entrance will include student gardens.
This extraordinary project will benefit our student body that primarily comes from the eastside of Detroit (95%) and are from high-risk areas. Currently, AOW does not have a playground or gym, which are essential for students’ physical development and cognitive wellbeing.
Oronde Kearney, our Chief Academic Officer here at AOW, sums it up best: “The community playground will provide a place for children to explore, be active, have fun and interact with their peers. It also gives them a safe learning environment to develop physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills. We are looking forward to seeing our students expand their horizons through exploration and play.”
Here’s how you can help! Our goal is to collect $250,000 toward this amazing project through donations from local businesses and individual community members. Donations will go directly towards bringing this magical playground to life. We welcome any donations no matter how large or small!
