Calypso

LISTEN2THEKIDS is an artistic collective based in the Bronx. We create platforms for artists to be the best versions of themselves through artistic projects (albums, films, comics etc.) and events (open mics, showcases, etc.). Our team consists of musical artists, filmmakers, graphic designers, and many more different fields of media. We want to encourage creation for the next generation, using the resources that exist around us. 

We're currently working on a film titled 'Calypso', a story of a young black Vietnam soldier who falls in love with a woman on the enemy side. They begin to question their loyalties as they attempt to build a paradise together in the midst of a war. This tale will explore racial tension, political allegiances, love, duty and spirituality.

As a period piece, there are many nuances we want to capture accurately as we recreate the atmosphere of Vietnam in the 1960s. This involves the right location, wardrobe, props, camera lenses, designers, and more. 

The money we raise will go towards travel, location, props, cast & crew compensation, equipment rentals, the screening, & more.

We will also host a screening upon the project's completion. Our desire is to bring people together safely for a film festival that will display the work of other local Bronx artists that have been creating films during these trying times. The film and this festival both will have themes of making what we can out of what we have despite the conditions of the world around us.

Because of COVID there are many people who have felt pressured in their lives and work. This will be relatable for both Essential workers and those who had to quarantine/study at home. Showing the power and will we have to create and connect- through the conditions or War around us.

With this content we'll also provide posters, zines, merchandise, exclusive BTS footage, and other add-ons that will be available.
