Fighting maternal mortality

HELP US TO RAISE 30K BY MAY 31ST

Sunset
is a documentary that focuses on maternal mortality rates in disenfranchised women of color.

Sunset does a deep dive into Nigeria’s dihcotomic healthcare system. We follow women on their journey to childbirth. Through the memories of relatives, who share how their lives were forever changed, after the loss of their mother during childbirth. They introduce us to a complicated two tiered medical system that leaves all mothers vulnerable to maternal mortality. While the budding middle class may trust the hospital system, poor and rural women often seek traditional midwives and doulas. But all women are at risk for some of the worst outcomes in the world. We follow as they try to access maternal care, from confirmation to delivery, and learn about the challenging journey women face in Nigeria, and globally. Questioning the people responsible for health care policy at the very top. For too many the sun has already set, but these women fight for a new day.

The greatest conflict is a history of policies that have left African mothers out of the conversation of development. On a local level we question which policies can better prevent maternal mortality in Nigeria, and even beyond for the world. Women and their families show us how their deliveries end, revealing if the baby and mother make it safely, or if another sun will set for the last time on a mother in Nigeria.

Our Journey

Our journey started in 2017 with informal interviews and conducting research.  The delivery of healthcare varies between Nigeria and the USA, especially in women's health. We are working with medical providers with firsthand knowledge of maternal health in Nigeria who have been invaluable in lending their expertise on the subject. Causes of maternal mortality is multifactorial, requires interdisciplinary approaches to mitigate. While it's not lost on a keen observer how the system has failed these women, it is not too late to restore hope to some that have been disenfranchised through no fault of their own.

Road to 30K

Our fundraising goal of 30K by May 31st will enable us to send our director and cinematographer back to Nigeria in June to resume principal photography. We also intend to hire local crew to further assist us, we'd be able to take care of welfare and lodging for our crew members. The pandemic upended our original plans to start by Fall of 2020 (I'm sure we can all relate), so we've had to push back our date, unfortunately with unforeseen costs.  We plan to film for approximately 2 months, acquire footage to put together a short introduction that we can showcase this Fall. This would enable us to further our campaign to finish the feature length film.

Supporting us

Supporting us means restoring a sliver of hope to some of these women, it means a pregnant woman doesn't have to choose between her own survival and bringing a life into the world. You would have done that.
