People are now homeless, dying of starvation and are being murdered in the streets for peacefully protesting their rights to democracy.
After the landslide victory (by 80%) for the National League for Democracy (NLD) in the last election in February of this year, the military junta (Tatmadaw party) have taken over the country in a coup and have illegally detained Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Chancellor, amongst other highly regarded politicians to exert their power and prevent the rising of the people.
This is part of the ongoing ethnic cleansing that you may have already heard of affecting many minorities across the country, particularly the Rohingya people in Rakhine State. The military are now exerting their power even more dramatically all across Myanmar by dropping bombs, shooting innocent, unarmed people, including children, in the street and forcing people out of their homes into dire, life threatening situations.
When cycling through Myanmar prior to the pandemic, I became friends with Pan, who, like all people from Myanmar, is kind hearted, genuine and an extremely hard worker. She called me crying and begging for help after she lost her job, home and family due to standing up for her rights with the non-violent Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). We cried together as she told me that she's hiding with a friend and surviving off of dried rice as they are starving and living petrified. I promised I'd do all I could to help.
Pan has written a list of the families in her community that have been displaced and are desperately struggling. £40 can feed an entire family for a week in Myanmar and it's our human responsibility to do all we can to help our brothers and sisters that are in need.
The military have already cut off phone networks for more than 45 days and plan to disconnect wifi so that the people cannot have any contact with the outside world making them even more vulnerable and completely isolated. We have to get help to them before this happens! There is talk that this may happen after April 6th (Tuesday) so we have a 48 hour dash to raise as much as possible in case we lose contact then! If we don't, we will continue the fundraiser to offer ongoing support - UPDATE: WE STILL HAVE CONNECTION BUT THE FAMILIES MAY HAVE TO MOVE FROM YANGON. WE ARE STILL ABLE TO OFFER AND SEND SUPPORT FOR FOOD. REFER TO UPDATES FOR MORE INFO OR FEEL FREE TO SEND ANY QUERIES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!
Please, give anything you can, no matter how small, and if you're not in the position to donate, share this page and raise awareness about the horrific crimes against humanity that are taking place in Myanmar right now.
Below is a list of the people in Pan's community that will be directly helped through this fundraiser. They are so extremely grateful for our support. I, Hannah Kern, will be sending the funds directly to Pan to distribute food and care to the people given list. Money will be transferred via Ria Money Transfer (similar to Western Union)
Thank you so much for reading and supporting the people of Myanmar xxxx
