Newman Mosque, (Abydos Way, Newman, Shire of East Pilbara in Western Australia), is the only mosque between Perth and Port Hedland on the Great Western Highway, some 1200 kms from
Perth. In addition to being the place of worship for the Newman residents and the FIFO( fly in fly out)
workers, the Newman Mosque provides the travelling Muslims on the Perth-Port Hedland
route, a place to refresh, take rest and offer their prayers before continuing their journey.
It was first built in 1984 on a self-help basis by a group of Muslim residents in Newman
Town representing different nationalities and ethnicities. This was a big news item at the

Physical Description: The mosque is a an octagonal (to be verified), two storey building,
constructed of metal Trimdeck. It is accessed by means of external stairs. It was formerly the
common room for the original single men's quarters, and it was moved to its current location in
the late 1980s. The mosque is used daily by some Muslim people, and is open on Fridays for the
special prayers sessions held then
The Mosque building is currently in very bad shape with significant damage to the sub-
structure and numerous leakages from the roof. The building walls and doors require
replacement or significant repairs. The building is a safety hazard now with significant risk of
injury to the occupants in case of a catastrophic failure. Please see the pictures of the
building depicting the general condition of the building.
A project is underway to address this situation and the most urgent repairs for Stage 1 have
been estimated to cost $91000
Newman Muslim Association has so far managed to raise $91000 as donations from the
existing users of the Mosque. We are now requesting donations from wider communities
and all those who are able to recognise the unique nature of this place of worship to meet
this target.
The money raised will be spent on refurbishment works of the Newman Mosque. Newman Muslim Association is the ultimate beneficiary of this fundraiser
