Hello Friends and Family!
This year, through UBC Midwifery, 8 of us will be travelling to Uganda in May and June to embark on UBC's global midwifery elective. Here, we will be responsible for working at three referral hospitals in Uganda. These hospitals include Mbale Regional Referral hospital, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital and Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. In each hospital we will be working in the labour and delivery wards where we will assist with prenatal care for women as well as assist with labours and delivery, including managing any emergencies that may arise. During our time in Uganda we will work with local skilled attendants to learn about best practices for labour and delivery in a setting where resources are minimal. This year we also have the opportunity to help facilitate workshops in Kampala for updating skills of midwives and nurses, with our Uganda colleagues as co-trainers.
As part of UBCs global midwifery program, we spend a month in March learning about the theoretical components of maternal-infant health in developing countries. We also work to create teaching materials that will better help us to spread our knowledge and skills that we have learnt with our colleagues in Uganda. For this program, we are working to fundraise for and donate supplies to each referral hospital in Uganda. These supplies range from medications to treat bleeding during birth, bags and masks to resuscitate newborns, and gloves.
Your donations will help with purchasing items for each referral hospital so that aside from our knowledge we can leave each community with necessary medical equipment which they may not be able to afford otherwise. Our goal is to create a bilateral learning experience so we are able to learn about labour and birth skills in low resource settings while sharing our knowledge that we have gained through UBC Midwifery with healthcare practitioners and students in Uganda.
