We didn’t expect Cancer from sore knees and a fever and we sure didn’t think Acute Myeloid Leukemia was around the corner, but it was.
At the beginning of April 2020, Hunter was a typical 17 year old kid. His biggest worry was waiting for the stay at home order to lift and what summer job he was going to have. On April 26, 2020 he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and sent to UNC Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric ICU.
Hunter had gone through two rounds of chemotherapy treatment. He had only 4% disease left after the two treatments and his doctors felt the best place for him is to go to St. Judes hospital in Memphis, TN. They were in Memphis about a month and a half. The therapy St. Jude gave him did not work. His disease came back at 75%. Hunter was admitted at UNC Chapel Hill again for a third and fourth round of chemo. The hope was to get him in complete remission so he can have a bone marrow transplant to keep the leukemia from coming back. Hunter's Doctors are looking for clinical trials that best match Hunter's diagnosis. The family is also looking into alternative/integrative medicines to help Hunter. These types of therapies are not covered by insurance and can be very costly. The family is also helping Hunter live the best life possible. No one knows how much time he has left. Their faith, family and friends have been an absolute blessing and have carried them through this indescribable journey. The last thing a family should be thinking about during these times is money.
