Aid for Athletes from Support Clean Sport

Sport has been a huge part of our lives and is engrained in the cultures of the United States and countries around the world. As we all deal with unprecedented impacts of the coronavirus on our lives so too do the athletes that drive our passions. We have all seen sport come to a complete halt for the first time in modern history. While the high-profile and well-paid athletes many of us worship can weather this storm better than most of us, thousands of amateur and Olympic athletes who dedicate their lives to the love of sport are dependent on competitive income for their livelihoods. These athletes represent the foundation of amateur sport and many of them are struggling along with so many other people today.

Many of these athletes work regular jobs even if they are lucky enough to be supported with stipends from the USOC or the 50 National Governing Bodies (NGBs) that together oversee amateur sport in America. Many of these athletes are impacted both by a loss of a job and competitive income. With competitions halted and income down, many NGBs are also having to furlough staff, further impacting the support structure for amateur athletes.

Support Clean Sport (SCS) and Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG) are leading the charge on a fundraising effort to provide direct #AidforAthletes. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to provide $1,000 each to 100 impacted athletes throughout the amateur and Olympic sport movement. Funds will be available to athletes licensed for competition in one of the NGBs. We will work NGBs and other sporting groups and event organizers like USA CRITS to identify athletes that qualify for assistance within their communities and distribute the funds directly to them.

SCS, a grassroots initiative of the 501c3 non-profit public charity Anti-Doping Research, works to inspire a culture of clean sport with the SCS community of athletes and professionals leading by example. BSCG has been an international leader in third-party certification and testing of nutritional supplements for more than 15 years and is a cornerstone supporter of the SCS initiative.

Both SCS and BSCG were built by sport drug-testing guru Dr. Don Catlin and his son Oliver Catlin on a foundation of decades of experience at the forefront of Olympic and U.S. anti-doping efforts. For 5 years now SCS and BSCG have worked together to sponsor the Support Clean Sport/BSCG/Guttenplan Coaching Domestic Elite Cycling team competing in the USA CRITS series and other domestic elite races. This team embodies our message of clean sport and showcases the concept on the streets and on the podium.
