Intersection of Hope

UPDATE | New title and story - still 100% serves our original mission!!

This GoFundMe was initially titled "George Floyd Intersection of Hope". On 09/24/2020 we changed the fundraising title to "Hope Youth Center" which is located one block from GFS at Phelps Field Park. The Hope Youth Center is our equitable learning pod that we created to support our South Minneapolis middle and high school students as they navigate the unique challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest. Since school districts announced distance learning, families with resources have found solutions by creating learning pods. This obviously puts those without resources at a disadvantage. This is an opportunity to bridge that gap. As you likely know, the achievement gap stands to broaden as our under-resourced children experience the highest level of barriers to a successful education leaving them behind, which is not okay with us. More information can be found on our website realmpls.org!

We are so overwhelmed with all the love and support! As of 09/06/2020 over $20K of the donations have gone to: Shelter needs, security and 1st aid, sanitation and hygiene, small biz support, food providers, velvet stanchions, flower pots/raised beds, and a large canopy tent for George Floyd Square. The process of helping maintain GFS has been completely organic. There has been no planning, and we are able to get by with volunteer help and limited financial support from the community.

BACKGROUND: My name is Mary Claire, and I grew up in the neighborhood where George Floyd was murdered. I am a college student and a woman of color, who has experienced and witnessed firsthand the unfortunate obstacles of having a darker complexion. I am the proud daughter of an interracial couple, and it pains me to imagine what someone with a darker complexion endures, not to mention a black man in America. I created this campaign to raise funds for my community that is suffering and needs your immediate support. The initial focus was helping to lovingly preserve George Floyd Square and eventually we grew. Community volunteers work tirelessly to make it a safe and comfortable space to visit by fulfilling medic and security needs, beautifying and maintaining GFS itself, and working the entry stations to provide masks, sanitizer, water, etc.

We are in this together! #BLM #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd
