My name is Blaze, a masc-presenting, non-binary, queer Creator and I am asking for #TipsforTopSurgery. Labels are hard and do not always fully encapsulate a person’s identity, but I’ll do my best, follow me, won’t you?
Like life, my path to self-discovery has not been straight and narrow. However, at the end of 2015, I made the decision to reclaim ownership of my self-identity and began Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The decision, like many life-altering ones, while exciting left me filled with anxiety as I was moving into an experience unknown. It was challenging at first, as there were not a lot of people that looked like me online to share experiences with, and community/support is a vital part of not only the queer but also the trans experience.
Fast-forward to 2020, my vision clearer than ever, my desire and determination strong, I am very warmed to share that I will soon be undergoing Gender Affirming Surgery aka “Top Surgery”. If you’ve made it this far, and are still interested -- read on! :)

What is Top Surgery?
“Top Surgery is a gender affirming procedure for transgender men and non-binary individuals that creates a masculine chest. Top Surgery involves breast removal (Mastectomy) and male chest contouring.

THE PROCESS:
TONS of research goes into picking a surgeon for your Top Surgery and is a large part of the process. There are consultations with the Doctors themselves, scouring the internet for testimonials and photos of results (especially looking for those that started with similarities to you), forums, and also directly contacting people for their personal experiences. After speaking to a few different Doctors, I have finally decided on one whose consistent results and patient care has proven to ease all the nerves that exist with that “journey to the unknown” that I mentioned earlier.
THE RECOVERY:
Firstly, I will be traveling away from my home state to have the procedure, which means at least one week of lodging in place for a follow-up appointment. Like with any surgery, stillness is a key component in a smooth recovery process, so I will oblige and not compromise my health, or our investment :). After the initial week, there is still another 3-5 weeks of recovery necessary, and I will not be able to do any activity which requires me to lift my arms (above my ribs), or any major twisting and turning of my body, so no joga or reaching up on the top shelf for the little people in my life, and NO DISHES (probably my favorite perk).
