Innocent Chicago Small Business Destroyed & Looted

Donation protected
Hello friends and family,

My name is Marie Moon, and I am from Glenview, Illinois. My parents are Kwang and Flora Moon, and own a small business in the south side of Chicago. I am writing to you at this time due to the recent events that have transpired throughout the country. From 11:00AM to 4:00PM on May 31st, 2020, my parents' small business store, Blossom Shoes, was completely looted. Everything was stolen or damaged. Upon arrival Sunday evening was shattered glass, broken metal, and a sea of empty, trampled shoe boxes waist high.

My parents have worked over 33 years to build their business to only watch it get ransacked by a mob on a live Snapchat story. We were horrified. With no other choice, my parents helplessly watched Blossom Shoes get overrun by looters tearing open a metal shutter gate to the entrance of the store. Like many immigrant families, my first generation Korean parents have worked through blood, sweat, and tears to build this proud business of their own in hopes to support a better life for my siblings and me. My parents have worked 365 days a year for as long as I can remember and have never taken off for holidays. Over the years, they have grown deeply fond of the customers in the community with love that’s close to family. They’ve worked long enough to even witness multiple generations of family come in to buy newborn shoes, back to school shoes, new-job shoes and even birthday shoes. They have grown up with the community. We support this global movement of the fight against systemic injustice and racism placed on the black community. It’s wrong and it’s about time changes are made. We stand beside the protestors marching for their rights and for all the black folks wrongly killed, racially profiled and heavily oppressed—whether it was recorded or not. My parents love this community and are devastated.

The purpose for this GoFundMe page is to help get my parents, Kwang and Flora Moon, back on their feet and recover from the recent events, impacted at almost $300k in damages/lost property. This is my parent’s main source of income and has also supported our family as well as Anthony, their long-time and only employee, for the past 22 years. This job has supported him from a young age, and he is now unemployed. These funds will be used for repairing damages to the property and inventory. Necessary repairs include broken glass windows, interior display cases, display light fixtures, stockroom shelving, display racks, metal gates, multiple entrance doors, and security system. Inventory damage includes the loss of the entire merchandise of assorted shoes, shoe accessories, and sock inventory. All funds from GoFundMe will be withdrawn directly to my parents Kwang and Flora Moon.

If you could support this GoFundMe by making a donation and sharing it with your network, it would be more than helpful and supportive in getting my family through this tough time. We understand that times are uncertain and money may be tight, so please know that your donation/support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continued support, and we pray this may all pass soon.

Sincerely,
The Moon Family
