Help Save Two Little, But Very Important LIVES

Dear friends,
Many of you do not know that I have two step sisters from my dad’s side, living in St. Petersburg, Russia. The oldest, Katya, is a classical violinist. Her husband Igor is a renowned Russian cellist, a laureate of various international competitions, and a member of St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra. Together, they have three boys, David (7), Mark (5), and Andrian (3).
A tragedy beyond comprehension occurred in their family on April 24, 2020. Their two children, Mark and Andrian, were diagnosed with the lethal disease adrenoleukodystrophy. This disease results in a buildup of fatty acid caused by the relevant enzymes not functioning properly, causing irreversible damage to the brain. It took almost a year for Russian doctors to identify it because it is extremely rare. Only 1 in 20,000 boys gets affected, but for Katya and Igor, this disease struck two out of their three boys. To make matters worse, it is untreatable in Russia. The only solution is an urgent allogeneic transplantation of LENTI-D (VECTOR) gene-modified bone marrow. This therapy uses stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow, which are then genetically modified with the help of a vital vector to include a functional copy of the ABCD1 gene. These cells are then transplanted back into the patient where they develop into different cell types, including brain cells. It takes six to 18 months for the transplanted cells to be fully engrafted and functional.
Mark and Andrian’s grandmother, a pediatrician, has researched an immense amount of information, regarding treatment options and institutions working with this illness. With the help of many colleagues, she reached out to the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation Center (BMT) in the University of Minnesota. BMT has been studying this disease for over 30 years and is considered to be the best facility in the world when it comes to adrenoleukodystrophy treatment. BMT has agreed to treat the children and the family is in direct contact with Ashish Gupta, MD, MPH (Marrow Transplant Physician). Dr. Gupta strongly recommends that Mark be operated on in a month as his case is advancing rapidly. Transplantation can stop the progression of the disease. However, it has to be done in a timely manner since the brain damage can be irreversible.
Both children's treatment cost $840,000.

Старшая, Катя Шмелева-профессиональная скрипачка, ее муж Игорь Ботвин- хорошо известный виолончелист, неоднократный Лаурет международных конкурсов . Они растят трёх сыновей-Давиду 7 лет, Марку 5 и Андриану 3 года.
Мирная жизнь их семьи рухнула в один миг, когда в марте двум мальчикам-Марку и Андриану- врачи поставили диагноз Адренолейкодистрофия, быстротекущая болезнь, вызванная генной мутацией, и поражающая все системы человеческого организма, мозг поражается одним из первых. Заболевание встречается с частотой один из двадцати тысяч, но в семье Кати и Игоря двое ребятишек стали носителями этого генного изменения.
В России не существует методик лечения, поэтому одна из бабушек, врач-педиатр по профессии, после интенсивнейших исследований и обмена информацией, с помощью коллег смогла достичь соглашения с Институтом Трансплантации крови и костного мозга (Миннеаполис, Миннесота)-самым передовым центром в мире с почти тридцатилетним опытом лечения заболевания- который готов принять братьев на лечение. Марк нуждается в операции срочно, в течении месяца, чтобы не начались необратимые процессы в головном мозге.
Стоимость лечения для обоих мальчиков составляет сумму в 840 тысяч долларов. Сбор средств идёт невероятно активно и в России, и за рубежом, при поддержке коллег музыкантов, актеров, журналистов, но сумма настолько огромна что сейчас мы просим Вас о помощи!
Мы понимаем, что в настоящий момент все находятся в весьма неблагополучной и нестабильной ситуации, но, к сожалению, времени дожидаться лучших времён у Марка с Андрианом нет!
