Emerson Elementary: Our Kids Deserve the Best!

Want to make a difference for our next generation of learners and innovators? I'm raising funds to ensure that all of our teachers and learners have access to one of the most powerful teaching tools available: an interactive TV monitor.   This is a long-term investment!

Emerson Elementary is a Title I school in Madison, WI that serves 60% low-income students and 50% students of color.  We have shown great progress over the past four years and don't want to lose momentum. For example,  in 2016, 57% of our students met a Wisconsin early literacy assessment benchmark.  In 2019, 86% of students met this same benchmark.  Our African American students demonstrated even stronger growth, moving from 45% to 84% over these same years.  Due to the COVID-19 school shut downs, we anticipate learning losses.  I want to do everything possible to get all of our amazing learners back on track. Our kids deserve it!

Specifically, I want to raise funds to pay for 10 more interactive Promethean TV monitors, which will equip every classroom with this incredible learning tool.  These classrooms currently have a standard TV monitor (non-interactive).

EVERY $610 BUYS AN INTERACTIVE TV MONITOR FOR A TEACHER!
(After we trade in our standard TV monitor, which is a no-brainer!).   And this is the last year we get this trade-in offer.  Next year, we would need to pay nearly 3 x this cost.

Thanks to a Festival Foods donation of $610 on 8/13/20, we now have a fundraising goal of $5490! ($6100 - $610)

For the 2019-20 year, we raised funds to pay for 17 interactive TV monitors.  Here is a video of Ms. Gutche demonstrating and explaining why they matter:

VIDEO DEMO AND EXPLANATION

Emerson teachers who used them say:

-I cannot imagine not having an interactive board.  Primary classrooms especially need the ability to interact.  Non-interactive TVs are just a projection screen.  We need to stay current on best practices in teaching and learning.

-Teachers can model for the whole class and write on the screen at anytime.  This keeps learning engagement and helps lessons go more quickly for good student/lesson pacing.

- The interactive board allows for writing lessons in which the students can actually see “real” handwriting being modeled.  This is crucial at the primary level.

-It saves time and paper!  Teachers can create EVERYTHING electronically!  This saves materials and it will save space/furniture as clunky paper easels are not as necessary.

- The interactive piece helps lessons go more smoothly, be more engaging, and makes planning much more efficient.  I don't have to spend so much time creating materials.

-So many interactive online resources to integrate into lessons.  Financially a plus - not purchasing as many supplemental materials.

I realize this is a challenging time in our country for fundraising.  I would not ask if my Title and overall budget was not already cut for next year, and that is before further cuts that may come from the pandemic tax revenue loss.  I ask because I have seen how powerful technology can be for learning in the hands of great teachers. I want my teachers and students to have every opportunity to love and transform learning.  If you are able, I deeply believe that supporting our next generation is one of the greatest investments we can make as a community and country.  Thank you for considering .  Any donation will help make an impact and means so much to our teachers and students.

Sincerely,

Brad Kose, Principal
