The YBB(Young Black Boys) Mentoring Project

Tax deductible
We have set up a project called the YBB Mentoring Project (Young Black Boys), which will raise aspirations, educate and inspire YBB to be the best versions of themselves and to help combat the stereotypes and pressures they face.

Every contribution counts if we change even one young black boy’s life the results for the community and their family is everlasting...

I am Segun Adeniji. The founder and Chair of Trustees of Fit 4 Future Foundation, a small charity, registered in 2016, which works with children and young people on developing and protecting their physical and mental health, including social wellbeing, through sport and physical activity.

The creation of Fit 4 Future Foundation came about as I discovered my passion for working with the younger generation, combined with my appetite for keeping fit and active. I made it my personal mission to reach out to as many children and young people as I could, to teach them and fill them with the knowledge they need to grow into strong, skilled, healthy young adults, both physically and mentally.

My journey on becoming the person I am today has been extremely challenging at times, with one key stand out factor being that I am a black male.

Growing up in the Lewisham borough of South London, I have had to face many negative stereotypes. I watched close friends and peers succumb to many of these pressures, involving themselves with local gangs, abusing drugs, committing various crimes and in some cases losing their lives or loved ones. On reflection, this could have been me on some many occasions. With my family support and a resilient attitude, I overcame the challenges faced to successfully pass my GCSE’s and A levels and went on to graduate with a BA Honours degree.

As I stand here now and reflect on my journey and the work the charity conducts, I want to do more. I want to support young black boys who may find themselves in a similar position.  I was fortunate and went ‘against the grain’ but so many others will not get the same chances as me.

Mission Statement:
Raising aspirations, educating and inspiring Young Black Boys to be the best version of themselves.

What is the YBB Mentoring Project?
A mentoring and support initiative for young black boys (age range 12-16) in the Inner London region using male black role models and the power of sport as tools for success.

The programme is designed with theory and practical elements in which we will focus on Academics e.g. grades, Social-emotional wellbeing e.g. relationships with others, Mental Health – e.g. alcohol/ drugs and addiction and preventing risky behaviours e.g. sexual / gang life.

The practical elements are designed around sport in which they will have the opportunity to participate in team sports and be led through Personal fitness training sessions, alongside being educated on training and nutrition. Furthermore, YBB mentees will also be led through qualifications including Level 1 in Sports Leadership Award.

The theory sessions will be focused on
·      Increase self-belief/self confidence
·      Dealing with pressures and stereotypes
·      Managing their behaviours and emotions
·      How to avoid crime and violence
·      Connecting YBB to positive black male role models who have shared life experience
·      Setting goals and raising aspirations
·      Facilitating access to opportunities and experiences within the business and sporting world

Why is the YBB Mentoring Project important?
The YBB Project comes as a result of my own personal journey and the alarming statistics and trends surrounding Young Black Boys. Young Black Boys are statistically proven to be at a disadvantage and consistently ‘set up to fail’.

 * Research suggests that Black boys are less likely to achieve good educational outcomes with rates of permanent exclusion approximately three times that of the pupil population

 * Young black boys have a higher statistical chance of a run in with police due to unprecedented stereotyping that they are ‘troublemakers.’ Statistics prove black people were over 3 times as likely to be arrested as White people in London.

Who will YBB Help?
The project will be run in schools and communities across London. The YBB mentoring project will focus on both those boys who are underachieving, disengaged, and vulnerable and those young black boys who are highly achieving but face discriminatory disadvantage and lack of opportunities.

How will the money be used?
The funding will be used to launch the YBB programme in more schools across London.

The funding will cover the cost of the mentees gaining qualifications including the SLQ Sports Leadership Level 1 Award, motivational talks, workshops and staffing.
