Midwifery Education for Black Queer Trans Person

Donation protected
Dear Community Member,

I'm calling on your support as I begin the process of becoming a Nurse-Midwife.

I have established this campaign in order to assist me in covering the cost of prerequisite courses I am required to take before I begin my degree program. These nine prerequisite courses must be paid for out of pocket. My goal is to apply to combined BSN/MSN programs in August 2021, making my earliest possible graduation date August 2024.

I am in this for the long haul, and every bit of your support will be invaluable to my ability to accomplish these goals.

I have desired to be a Midwife since undergoing my Birth and Abortion Doula trainings, in 2017 and 2018 respectively. It was then I realized that Birthwork is a vitally important facet in the fight to protect Black, Queer, and Transgender lives.

Did you know that :

•Pregnant Black people are 5x more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white people.

•Pregnant Black people are more likely to experience preventable death during childbirth compared with white people.

•Among Black people, neither income nor education levels reduces the heightened rate of pregnancy-related death.

•Black people experience more maternal health complications than white people.

Who am I? I am a multilingual, bicultural, Queer, Transgender, femme-identified Black person of Haitian descent with a science and education background. I am attempting to secure this path of healing for the sake of my own growth and resilience, and for the health of those who face similar forms of exclusion and systemic harm.

Why is it important to support Black, Queer, and Transgender People of Color who wish to do this work? We need more Black LGBTQIIA2S people in medicine in order to disrupt the prevalent experiences of racism, transphobia, and homophobia within the healthcare system. The COVID-19 pandemic has made me even more aware of the need for qualified healthcare professionals willing to provide care to BIPOC LGBTQIIA2S communities, who are often excluded from mainstream care networks.

Additionally, the worldwide protests for Black lives and anti-racism have reminded me of the vital healthcare work that is happening outside of established medical facilities. Specifically, I have seen the importance of street medics who are providing wound care, alleviate respiratory issues following exposure to teargas, and triage throughout this movement.  It is my desire to use my ongoing education in Nursing to train others in these vital skills.

I look forward to developing effective tools to provide full-spectrum care to all pregnant people, and to continue to promote health and wellness for all BIPOC LGBTQIIA2S community members and our shared social movements.

All of your contributions will go towards tuition, fees, supplies, and secure housing so I can begin my education.

Funding this part of my journey would affirm your support of all Black, Trans people who wish to foster a better world through acts of service and solidarity. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Wallace Louis
