I’m Miah, i’m an artist, aspiring activist, and model yet I also happen to be a woman of the intersectional black transgender experience. So you’re probably thinking..what does it mean to be a woman deemed privileged enough to check every single box on a minority quota ? What does it mean to be first deemed a woman, a transgender woman, an ethnic minority, a black woman and to be other... a human. What is her reality in 2020? It means you probably won’t live past the age of 33 through either homicide or suicide. It means to be unemployed and that you definitely will be a victim of circumstance. It means you'll be reliant on a floored benefit system and that’s only if they’re eligible and available to access that. It means being unintentionally available at any given time to fall prey to hate crimes including being assaulted by planned and targeted rape or being attacked by a group of flirting men in a public space. It means being forced into a life of survival sex work and all the dangers that entails. Let’s talk about passing privilege, and discuss how significant it can be altering one's experience here on earth. “Passing” can mean the difference between being afforded an education or not, slipping under the radar or not. Being employed and having a somewhat successful life and being able to thrive as a human being or not. Passing is essentially paradoxical but this experience is greatly reduced to being lucky enough to be those fortunate few trans people who are readily available fit the physical, descriptive parameters of the gender they prescribe to. Unless you have a race or class privilege that can supersede that. In my experience growing up in a red state, I’ve been actively trying to move forward with my transition for about two years now and it feels as if it’s impossible at this time in my life. My poor mental health and dysphoria has lead me, living in constant anxiety fighting with negative thoughts of myself & I’m tired of feeling like a burden when I’m in need of some help. I started taking HRT the beginning of this year and was so happy to start I’ve been working my ass off to save for my transition but due to being laid off in the midst of a pandemic, my transition has been on hold:( The money would be used for filing for name change& gender marker, hormones, a tracheal shave, breast augmentation, and hopefully ffs.)
