Help Doreen Go to Parsons for Fashion Design

Donation protected
Hey y'all! My name is Doreen Pierre and I'm a black queer fashion writer, community events producer, and visual content creator residing in Brooklyn, NY.

A little bit about me:

When I moved to NYC in 2015, I was a broke, recent college graduate, who had just come out as queer and knew I loved menswear.  It was discouraging when I couldn’t find menswear that fit because of my bust and hips. I was used to seeing the highly curated pages of queer women influencers who, through brand partnerships, had access to tailors who were able to alter traditional menswear patterns into clothing that fit their bodies. At thousands of dollars to get a suit made, I knew this wasn’t t an accessible option for people like me. I started researching and documenting off-the rack brands, trying each of them on as I went. I created a blog called, “DapperPenniless”  to share what I learned to help women, non-binary, and trans folk achieve the menswear looks they desired. Five years later, I’m a freelance contributor to the Huffington Post  and Autostraddle surrounding queer fashion, styling and beauty topics. Now, I’m ready to take it one step further by going to Parsons to immerse myself in learning fashion design. This is where I need your help!

Every little bit counts:

Your contributions, no matter how big or small, would allow me to focus on bringing my unique perspective to the table in creating solutions based products for people like me who are asking for more from the fashion industry. My goal is to use the knowledge, technical, and digital skills gained in this program, to manifest my dream of creating collaborative sizing frameworks, and use the connections gained to seek out sustainable factories, materials, and funding in the creation of future community based clothing products.

The breakdown:

This program should take about 2 years to complete and I'll be starting it this August: So far I have a $10,000/year merit scholarship and about $20,000 in federal loans offered to me for the duration of the program. I'm hoping to transfer over the max amount of credits from my Bachelor's degree but this still leaves about $40,000 to pay for the duration of the program. If you can bless me with your funds I would highly highly appreciate it! It's not easy for me to ask for help but I can't carry this burden alone. If you can share this with your friends, colleagues, donors, white folk, honestly the rich, and encourage them to donate too, thank you as well!
