The Athens Police Department is getting a K-9 unit...
Meet Mathias! The Athens Police Department is gathering funds to add a K-9 unit. Mathias will be the first K-9 in the department's history. He will be tasked with patrolling with Officer Lowe. Mathias is a good boy with and an appreciative personality. He enjoys being outside and is ready to accept his assignment as a dedicated officer for the town of Athens.
Mathias knows the responsibility expected of serving and protecting the residents of Athens and our visitors. While taking his duty seriously, Mathias will also operate in a community role participating in events to include the Athens Explorers Program (a local program for children).
Mathias is currently trained in dual purpose serviceability as well as IPO (a test in tracking, obedience and protection) certified. Mathias' tracking ability will be instrumental in locating missing persons such as lost children, Silver Alerts and misplaced hikers. Mathias will also serve as a partner for Officer C. T. Lowe as he is the sole patrolling unit for our town.
Athens is a diverse community with ages varying from small children to college students to elderly. We are undeniably a pedestrian town; and with new hiking trails opening, Mathias will be a valuable community member and an asset to community safety.
Funds being raised will provide for the remaining cost for Mathias, leather gear, training and officer certification ($10,000 total).
Officer C. T. Lowe was recently presented with a check from a local business to kick off the fundraising effort. Thanks to their generosity, the department has reached half ($5000) of their goal to welcome Mathias home to Athens!
If you cannot donate at this time, please take a moment to share. Thank you for supporting our town, Police Department and Officer Lowe.
