Hi!
I'm Morgan and last year I began my medical transition, I received hormones and began to finally see the changes in my body that I had always dreamed of.
Eventually, I decided I want to begin the next step in achieving the body I always dreamed of having, and looked into top surgery. I was very excited to learn that my insurance covered the surgeries and that the doctor I wanted, Dr. Scott Mosser M.D of the Gender Confirmation Center, was in-network as well. I got all of my paperwork ready and documents to send, and waited patiently to see if I would get approved.
However, I was denied, despite having been diagnosed on multiple accounts with having gender dysphoria and meeting all of the criteria of WPATH for surgery.
I'm currently in the process of trying to get my claim appealed but after talking with several people I'm very positive that it will get denied again like so many other people have had done.
Top surgery is vital, for my physical and mental well being, and so even though my insurance won't cover it, I'm still going to pursue it. Rather than taking out a loan (as I just graduated from college and the last thing I need is more debt), I'm trying to pay out of pocket. The cost of the surgery is $10,000 and I'll have to pay for a flight and hotel as I need to stay a week in San Francisco while I heal until the follow-up visit. I have enough money saved up to pay for the room, board, and the flight, but coming up with the cost of the surgery is impossible because of the current employment crisis.
To put it into perspective how vital and important top surgery is, there are only three things I want in life right now--a stable and steady job, my own apartment, and top surgery, and I'm willing to give up both if I can have top surgery done. To me Top surgery will complete me, it will allow me to stop second-guessing people's judgments on me, and bring me one step closer to finally enjoying what I see in the mirror, and cherishing myself.
