When Pigs Fly: Help Farmers & Feed Those in Need

Together we can help pig farmers and feed Americans in need!

As we wrote out our New Year resolutions for 2020, it’s safe to say none of us thought we would soon be in the midst of a global pandemic. If you'd have asked us then we’d probably have said this would happen “WHEN PIGS FLY”! But here we are – and we’re all in this together.

Bombarded by news stories about the effects of COVID-19 and the hardships so many people are facing, we wondered what – if anything – we could do to help. After a conversation with Frank’s mom about what pig farmers in Minnesota are facing, an idea started to take shape.

COVID-19 recently shutdown major meat processing plants across the country and pig farmers are facing tough decisions. According to an ABC News report, millions of pigs are backing up on farms without enough food or space to care for them. Farmers are being left with little or no choice but to euthanize these animals. From April 25th to May 1st, some 200,000 pigs have been euthanized.

Frank hit the ground running on Friday, May 1st to try to help farmers and those in need. All the pieces came together very quickly – as if it were meant to be – and Frank left Colorado to make the first “When Pigs Fly” run on Monday, May 4th. We purchased 20 pigs from a farmer in Minnesota. Frank hauled the pigs across the country and delivered them to a small USDA-certified meat processor on the Western Slope of Colorado on Wednesday, May 6th. After processing, the meat was donated to Food Bank of the Rockies and will help feed those in need.

With the help of generous friends and family, Frank was able to make a second run, donating an additional 22 pigs to the cause.

Twenty pigs equates to about 3,600 pounds of edible meat. With the cost of pigs, gas and processing, the cost of each “When Pigs Fly” run is approximately $8,000. This is less than $2.50 per pound of meat.

We are NOT making any profit on this adventure . . . just looking to cover costs. Your support is greatly appreciated!
