A Heart for Scott

Donation protected
Hello family and friends,

As many of you know, Scott Edwards, my brother, is going through the process of getting a heart transplant. He and CB (Carolyn) are moving forward with his medical needs, which currently include an in-home nurse x3 weekly, medications, and weekly trips to Charleston for testing, which is a 2+ hour drive, each way. The expenses are already mounting. He also needs to have several other medical/dental procedures completed, prior to the transplant, most of which will be out-of-pocket.

In addition to his medical issues, he will be on limited work release and will suffer a significant loss of income. He will not able to play golf (as many of you know, Scott and golf are synonymous!) nor will he be able to officiate the area high school sports events, which he loved to do.

To update everyone on how we got here: Scott has had multiple heart attacks over the past few years, his last one in August. After receiving a pacemaker, he had numerous “incidents”, to include a serious infection. His team of doctors, on Hilton Head, decided that he needed to be seen by the heart specialists in Charleston, SC, at MUSC (The Medical University of South Carolina). It was here they determined he would need a heart transplant. While at MUSC, they had to replace the pacemaker, due to the infection, which prolonged his hospital stay. The target date for being placed on the list is mid-October, early November.

The transplant will take place in Charleston, SC at MUSC, which is one of the top teaching schools in the country. He’s very fortunate that they were able to accept him into their program.

This brings us to the reason for this Go Fund Me page. Scott will effectively be out-of-work, and/or, on very limited light duty, for the near future. With the pending hospital visits, clinic visits, and pending surgeries, he will definitely need our help. Once he has the heart transplant, he will be in ICU for 10-14 days. Once released, we have to stay in the Charleston area for approximately four months, or longer, if any complications arise. During the time he’s in ICU and living in Charleston, he will need a primary and secondary caregiver. CB and I will be his caregivers. I’m moving to HHI, to be his primary caregiver in Charleston; and, CB will be coming up several times a week. Just the day-to-day living expenses for this part is supposed to be approximately $11,000 to $15,000, depending on what we can find short-term, and whether its 4 months or longer.

The fundraising group at MUSC told us to expect the costs to reach or exceed (most likely), $30,000. This includes his out-of-pocket expenses, pre- and post-op prescriptions, and the living expenses mentioned, above. It does not include any surprises!! ☺

As you can imagine, this is overwhelming, to us. We are asking for any amount you are able to donate. Anything and everything would be greatly appreciated.

xoxo,

Kaybeth, CB, and Scott
