COVID-19: ora serve una Cura

(English version below)

New England Journal of Medicine, 1999).

We are doing everything we can to prevent COVID-19 infection.
We are doing everything we can to save our patients from the consequences of COVID-19.
But we are not doing everything we can to find drugs against COVID-19.

Viral infections are defeated with three weapons: prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The first two have been forcefully activated against COVID-19, the third still not. Yet every important victory against viruses has been obtained either through vaccines (Poliomyelitis, Smallpox) or through drugs (HIV, Hepatitis C). Only in this way could the lives of millions of people have been saved.

COVID-19 is no exception. To be effective, however, antiviral drugs must be used in combination. Let's take an example known to us: against HIV we initially had only one drug, AZT, which alone did "a little bit" but soon lost its effectiveness. Then we combined two drugs together, already better but not yet enough. Only when we combined three drugs that alone were not effective enough were we able to keep HIV under control. Following this strategy, our team at RIGHT quickly selected the best of these combinations in the laboratory and with this obtained the first ever described case of functional treatment of HIV, known as the Berlin Patient (New England Journal of Medicine, 1999).

We did it against HIV, we want to try to do it again against COVID-19. We have to combine the drugs available today, because creating new ones would take too long. We must do it first in the laboratory, to be able to quickly test the largest number of combinations, and finally apply the most promising ones to patients.
Give us the opportunity to fill our laboratories with specialized staff who work day and night, who test every possible combination of drugs available for which there is a scientific reason to be tested, immediate resources are needed that we do not have at this moment and we must find quickly. We need trained staff, researchers but above all funds, public and private to find a cure immediately, starting from the drugs we already have and recombining them, thanks to the experience we have already done and that has brought effective results against other enemies.
We put research back at the center, we and many other colleagues have the necessary experience, but without your immediate support we will not be able to do it: help us to help you.

RIGHT is a non-profit organization that deals with antiviral research. The RIGHT researchers, coordinated by Dr. Lori, were the first to obtain the functional care of an HIV-infected patient, the Berlin patient, through a combination of drugs previously tested in their laboratories. RIGHT relies in Italy also on its affiliate ViroStatics srl.

Dr. Franco Lori is an international researcher with over 30 years of experience in antiviral therapies, coauthor of over 100 international publications and recognized in 2000 as a "Hero in Medicine" for his achievements in HIV therapy.
