Protect front-line health workers from COVID-19

We are in the grip of a global emergency and the health workers on the front lines - in our NHS hospitals and in our care homes - are doing everything they can to keep us safe, to help us recover and to prevent further spread. These people are heroes. They are our friends and our family members and they are afraid; afraid of a spreading, viral threat. They are terrified for the lives of their patients, for the lives of their loved-ones and now for the lives of their colleagues as more and more clinicians are lost in the battle against COVID-19.
The challenge of securing adequate stocks of PPE has been described as a "Herculean effort". However, PPE is just part of this story. We know that the virus sits in the lungs, which means that any "aerosol generating" procedure such as intubation, nebulisation, resuscitation and ventilation can expel thousands of microscopic droplets carrying the virus from the patient, landing on people, equipment and surfaces across a wide area. This means that the chance of cross-infection is far higher and those staff without adequate protection are exponentially more at risk. Take hospital porters for example. They aren't clinicians trained in handling infectious cases and don't use PPE and yet many will be transporting patients between wards, who may be positive for COVID-19, putting them at risk. Even those medical teams with PPE supplies have told us that they feel a continuous, heightened sense of personal danger as a result of the current crisis.
They don't feel safe.
The AerosolSHIELD was created in six days by a friend of mine. It’s not a PPE replacement – it’s a lightweight, portable, transparent barrier between the clinician and the patient, giving them greater confidence to dive in quickly to start treatment, knowing they are more protected.
The SHIELD can be deployed faster than it takes a health worker to don the full PPE gear and in a situation where every second counts (e.g. resuscitation) - ease of use is critical for both patient and clinician. It can be left in place for hours on the same patient to provide extra protection through multiple interventions or procedures. It's already being tested by front-line staff at a number of hospitals and the feedback has been incredibly positive. The SHIELD is easy to use and dispose of safely and most importantly, it makes staff feel safer. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If we can reduce or even prevent aerosol spray from the patient’s lungs reaching an individual's personal protective gear in the first place, there’s even less chance of cross-infection or risk to personal health, helping more front-line staff breathe easier and focus on their primary objective of saving lives. The team behind the AerosolSHIELD continues to work completely free of charge to try to get this product into the hands of those who really need and want it.
They've managed to source a fantastic manufacturing partner: Airquee, an established supplier of medical isolation tents to the NHS and armed forces, whose expertise has been invaluable in creating a product appropriate and reliable for this sort of use. Global logistics leader, Ligentia , has also kindly volunteered to help ship the products to those who need it, putting SHIELDs in the hands of medical staff within days of manufacture.
If we can bulk order for the NHS, each SHIELD could cost just £40+VAT to manufacture and ship to where it needs to go - and the bigger the order, the more we can get for our money. NHS procurement is overwhelmed, so we are raising funds to donate as many AerosolSHIELDs as possible to hospitals and care homes around the UK, to provide added peace of mind to health workers at this incredibly stressful and traumatic time.
Our goal is £350,000 as this will provide at least 10,000 SHIELDs (the approximate number of people expected to require ICU admission in the UK for COVID-19 treatment in the coming months)
We know there is demand for the SHIELD. The product was born out of a late-night conversation on 27th March and the team has already received enquiries from clinicians all over the world, asking how they can get their hands on it. We also know that there are loads of great and highly-deserving causes out there but your contribution will go direct towards the manufacture and shipment of the AerosolSHIELD for the NHS only, helping to protect those who are risking their lives to save ours.

The AerosolSHIELD was designed by Matthew Campbell-Hill, with clinical guidance from Dr Egidio da Silva, Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and GP Dr Lydia Campbell-Hill.
Invaluable support was also provided by Dr Richard Williams and Dr Mark Reeves, Director at MRA Technology Ltd.
Commercial support was delivered by David Juggins from Hugo Technology Ltd, and Design Assistant Richard Baker-Stevens.
