Supplying vulnerable youth in Sierra Leone Covid-19 survival kits one neighborhood at a time.

Appeal for donation support/assistance


As a young girl, I was raised right in the midst of struggling youths. I was one of the lucky ones, I had a mother who knew how to turn two to four. I attended good schools, but my neighborhood, my mother's place of business, right outside my primary school was surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of street children. Some of them would work for my mom and many others as laborers who carry the heavy merchandise that we couldn't or were too tired to carry on our heads every day.

As Covid-19 broke out in Sierra Leone, the president made a clarion call for all well-meaning Sierra Leonean to join the bandwagon in eradicating the scourge of the virus ravaging human lives. I was happy to do the little that I could to help educate my friends, staff and family back home. However, just like many countries in the world, a lockdown was announced. Everyone was ordered to stay home and not be seen on the streets for the duration of the lockdown. Very strict social distancing guidelines. Then it hit me... a lot of the youth living in Sierra Leone live well below the poverty line.

According to evidence-based research conducted in five (5) communities in the urban district of Freetown,  85% of the youths are homeless and sleeping on market stalls. How do you tell them to go home? The streets are their homes. Where are they supposed to goas they practice social distancing?

Already living on hand to mouth, with the devastating effects of Covid-19 comes extreme starvation and unhygienic conditions which are ultimately a recipe for an untimely death.

There was no way I could turn a blind eye. When I received my stimulus check, I used it to buy materials and had my team of tailors and seamstresses to start the production of a thousand masks, purchased buckets, soaps and some basic food supplies to distribute to youth.

On April 27th, 2020 we thought it fit to launch the Youth Love Project right at the neighborhood where I grew up and saw youth sleep in gutters, as we ironically celebrated the 59th independence anniversary of Sierra Leone.

The socio-economic status of Sierra Leone is in disarray and business activities gradually grinding to a halt and the daily earning of most of our young men and girls who were daily wagers is non-existent due to the closure of most of the enterprises they were driving for.

Sierra Leone, as a country has faced its own share of disasters. Twelve years of civil war, Ebola, Mudslide, and flash floods which according to evidence-based research has left 53% of children and youth orphaned.

The possibility of these youth getting infected and unknowingly infecting others with the Covid-19, Coronavirus is very rife if pro-active measures are not taken to support and protect the youth. It is against the backdrop of the unimaginable conditions in which these helpless youths are living in that we cordially appeal to your heart for the support assistance to the Youth Love Project on behalf of vulnerable youths, for the purchase of urgently needed basic food supplies and sanitary supplies to rescue humanity.
