BOMBS & FISH – Can you help me set up my lab?

Donation protected
I LOST MY LAB – I led a program into a new age with 10 years of pioneering science, but very negative changes in the work-environment led me to being forced to leave my lab behind.  I am passionate about my work and contributed my own time to the advances we made, but something had to change and sadly I had to leave.  I took a leap of faith and left federal service, married my Swedish girlfriend, and I told myself I would find a way back to my career of 25 years in some way.

I am a California native and a pioneer of research that helps with the sustainability of fisheries resources by discovering the age, growth and longevity of fishes around the world.  My work is unique — I use fish otoliths (earstones) and nuclear bomb radioactivity from the 1950s and 1960s to understand how long fish can live.  I am one of a few people in the world that use this approach and I had visions of gaining a position to continue my work, but a win-win situation has not happened and COVID-19 is making things much worse (#SmallBusinessRelief) — I have been unemployed for almost a year and I need to make my job happen.

Since I left my position, I have worked on my own to complete projects on important fishes like yellowfin tuna, bigmouth buffalo, giant trevally, and several others (see my website - Age and Longevity Research ).  I am dedicated and now I find there are agencies around the world that want me and my expertise back in action.  Hence, I have decided to go it alone and I need your help.

My dream is to setup my own research lab as I had to leave everything behind.  My work requires some expensive equipment: micromilling machine, stereo microscope, low speed saw and lapping wheel, microbalance, and some other minor equipment and supplies.  I am a 20-year veteran of bomb radiocarbon dating and an expert in the use of micromilling, sclerochronology, and radiochemistry to determine how fish and other aquatic organisms live.  I plan to tackle some of the largest fisheries in the world, tuna of the Pacific Ocean in 2021 — some people cannot believe that yellowfin and bigeye tuna can live 15 years and this maximum age is important for proper modeling and sustainable use of these globally important species.

Additional projects I have lined up are with, 1) garibaldi (California State Marine Fish) — a recent discovery indicates they may live 60 years, and 2) endemic freshwater fishes of North America — we discovered that bigmouth buffalo (sucker fish) can live more than 100 years.  This is just the beginning of my long-term quest to follow my passion in discovering essential life history information about fishes of the world for sustainable fisheries and proper conservation measures — we cannot properly manage an aquatic ecosystem if we do not know how the fishes grow

I would be very grateful for your assistance in pulling together my lab.  In return, I will provide a newsletter for those that would like progress updates and I will continue to publish my findings in scientific and public venues.  Thank you for your time, consideration, and maybe a contribution.  Please SHARE this message with anyone that you think may be interesting in seeing my work continue.
